I have not seen the statement in the Patriot concerning Mr. Strong's letter, re- ferred to in the above quotation; but if the editor of the Patriot has made any such charge against me as is implied in the abov: paragraph, he must have been grossly imi informed,
The facts concerning Mr. Strong’s letter, as far as 1 know them, are as tullows:—1! was instructed that Mr. Ferguson had r ceived McDonald’s instalment, on condition that if the Government

could. not legally give him a Deed, his money would be returned to him; that on | one occasion, when O’Farre! was in the Land Office pressing his claim
to the same land, either Mr Mr. Strong told him he weuld notify Mc Donald to call, and his meney would |
refunded to him; that Mr. Strong a
cording!y in O’Farrell’s presence wrote a nete to McDonald stating in effect that his money had been received conditionally, and that tae Government found they couid not give him the land, and. asking him
call and get his money back; that Mr. Strong read this note to O'Farrell or told him its contents, and asked O'Farrell if he | would carry it to McDonald ; that O’Farrell | consented and went to McDonald who positively refused to give up the land or his purchase of it from the Government, | and challenged O'Farrell to sue him.

when McDonald was under examination, he was asked if the Commissioner of Pabiic Lands did not receive his instalments con | ditionally. He answered very positively | that he did not. He was asked to show his receipt—he said he hadn’t his receipt | in court. This denial was a surprise to me, | for I had been very positively instructed to the contrary, so | asked O'Farrell whac he | thought of it. He stated he did not believe the auswer, because the counter. | foil of the receipt in the Land Office ex- | pressed the money had been received | conditionally, and that Mr. Strong weuld net have written the letter! if the money had not been so received, | McDonald was then asked if he was aware that Mr. Strong had written him to call for | his money. He answered hewas not. I} then asked O'Farrell if he had told him of Strong’s letter, he said he had not, that he | thought it was of no use, as he had refused | to give up the land. O’Farrel’s counsel stated that he ha: not heard of Mr. Strong’s | letter. On learning this, I made no further | reference to it that I can remember, and as_ & fact it was not used as evidence in the cause. The above is shortly what I had heard | of this letter. I never knew it was said it| had been ‘‘ stolen or intercepted out of the | Post Office,” until Il read Mr. Ferguson’s | letter this evening ; and I can assure the! editor of the Patriot if I had known or | suspected such a thing, or even that it con- | tained anything Mr. Strong wished to | conceal from O’Farrel, I should have been very sorry to refer to it. If this letter was ever posted, I have been egregiously de- | ceived. I still believe it never was, and that any statement or belief to the contrary | is not correct. Yours, etc., M. McLeop.
