A Queer Tongue.

Some months ago William Surber, a mechanie of Wabash Indiana, noticed that the tungue of his son was becoming abnormally large, but did not report the Case to a physician until a day or so ago, when the tongue had increased to double its natural size, protruded from the lips, and rendered it impossible for the boy to take nutriment save in liquid form. The swollen tongue also inter- fered with respiration, and the phy- sicians, as a last resort, determined to trim the organ down toits proper pro- portions, though the operation is at- tended with the greatest danger. The reduction will be etfected in a few days.

The Coal Trade Outlook.

The North Sydney organ of the miners says: The present outlook for Cape Breton coal trade is far from cheering. Sules effected up to date are very sma!! in comparison with the siles for last year. Competition between colleries is very keen and prices are extremely low. Sydney mines coal was sold ata lower figure than ever Cape Breton was offered at. The following siles have been effected :—International mines, 20,000 tons; Caledonia mines, 15.000 tons, chiefly tothe C P. R.: Little Glace Bay,10,000 ; Sydney miner, 9,000 ; Reserve mines, 5,000 tops. The purchasers are the C. P. R,the North Shore Railway and Montreal Gas Com- pany. The Intercolonial Company of Westville have secured 15,000 tons ol the quantity wanted by the C. P. R.

Mr. Adolph Boisseraip, of Amster. dam, Holland, with 2 party of gentle. men, bas just passed over the Western Division of the Canadian Pacific Rulway. Hos telegraphs that they found the road to be as good as the best they know, the country mostly without snow, fine and promising beyond ex- pectation, the people looking strong, healthy and happy. Mr. Boisserain represents the administration office in Ainsterdam of an association having a very large number of members who have invested capitalin the Canadian Pacitic. Mr Buisserain and party were enabled to see spring farming in the North-West much further advauced than it isin Kascern Canada. We learn that the farmers commenced seeding a tew day ago at Moosejaw, Pense and indian Head. West of Moosejaw the seeding is all done.—JMontreal Herald.

For years past Halifax bas sustained #u upenviable notoriety for lax adminis- tration of justice, but two new judges have recently been appointed to the bench who belong to the younger generation and on Thursday a new cra Was inaugurated when Judge Rigby inflicted the follow- ing sentences : six men named Berrigan, Hawes, Keonedy, Warner, Ruddock, awod Riordan ior burglary got three years in the penitentiary each; and Susan Ockee, a prostitute for drugging and robbing a man, gotffive years. The judge said it was a revoltiog crime; Klijha Gross, colored, for manslaughter, got fourteen years ; James Desmond for attempted train wrecking, ten years, aud a boy named Morrison, for breaking into Bedford post office, and stealing

letters, received seven years. These severe sentences give promise of a wholesome elfect on our criminal Classes

Louisville comes to the fore again with the strongest man in the country. His name is John Bernhardt, but he resem

blesthe divine Sara in name only, though he is a native of Alsace, in the north of France. Bernhardt isa new-

comer to Louisville and is employed in the foundry department of a down-town factory, where his feats of strength are daily exhibited to the astonishment of his feliow-laborers. He is twenty-seven years old six feet four inches high and weighs 256 pounds, and with no sur-

plus flesh. He is not fat, but is the tinest specimen of muscular manhood seen here for a long time. A Post

reporter called in to see him this morn- ing and had a short interview with the brawoy Frenchman. He is not magni- ficent build, straight as an Indian. His chest is broad and deep and his chin and cheek bones indicate great strength ; but his armsare wondertul and round the biceps they measure seventeen inches. His hands look like bacon hams, His skin is smooth and red, though he never drinks a drop of intoxicating liquor of any kind what- ever and was never drunk in his life. He gave the reporter a few exhibitions ofhisstrength. Taking a piece of iron, which was afterward found to weigh forty-three pounds, Bernhardt held it horizontally at arm’s length for several minutes. Ile then raised a huge piece ofblock iron from the ground and placed it upon the sesles. It pulled eight hundred and sixty-four pounds, Taking a piece of bar iron two inches

wide and one inch thick, and, placiog it against his knees, he bent it double

easily. He took hold of a forty-two gallon barrel of water, and, balancing himself against a post, he went through the motion of drinking out of the bung- hole. He took a piece of seasoned oak, about the size of a wagon spoke, and broke it with his hands. Ee did various other wonderful things which demon- strated the possession of most extraor- dinary strength.

Bernhardt says he was never in the prize riog, but says he is not afraid to meet John L. Sullivan or any other map. He professes to be able to fell an ox with his bare fist and often killed boys in that manner while employed in a Chicago pork-packing establishment. His hands are as hard as wood, and a stroke from one of them would not ditter from a stroke of a mallet.
