Lonpon, Aug. 12.

A foree of 12,000 insurgents is concen- trated near the difficult pass of Vranduk, to oppose the further advance of General Phil- lipevich. Preparations for a desperate re- sistance tothe Grand Dake of Wurtemberg is also being made at Djuljesoro.

A Vienna despatch says Turkey has at last come toa full understanding with Aus- tria, The Porte has sent instructions to Serajevo that Austria was occupying Bosnia and Herzegovina pursuant to a friendly agreement with ‘Turkey.

A Berlin despatch says that a Russian ex- pedition to Central Asia aims at the occu- pation of six minor Khanates between Amudria and the Mountains of Hindoo Noosh. One of these (Vakhan) is a_ tribu- tary of Afghanistan. Its oceupation would reduce the distance hetween Russia and In-

dia to 325 miies.

Opgssa, Aug. 12. Sentence of death has been passed upon one Nihilist agitator, and four others have heen condemned to hard labor. In the ex- citement which followed, the crowd fired upon the troops, wounding four. The fire was returned, and two rioters were killed. Lonpon, Aug. 12. A despatch from Nicossa, Cyprus, says that a portion of the Indian contingent is going home immediately. Their embarka- tion for India has already commenced. The health of Cyprus is not improved. The prevalence of typhoid fever appears more serious. Onthe other hand a despatch from. Larnea says that the report of un- healthiness in the land is exaggerated. Malignant fevers are rare.

Clancy, the Fenian convicted in 1867 and aentenced to imprisonment for life, will be released on a ticket-of-leave on the 25th of Septem ber.

CONSTANTINOPLE, Aug. 11.

Embarkation of 40,000 of the Imperial Guard for Russia commenced on Saturday. The withdrawal of the rest from San Stef- ano and neighborhood of Vallisoli will fol- low immediately, and the Turkish troops will occupy positions as evacuated.

Lonpon, Aug. 12.

Advices from the west coast of Africa state that a great mortality has prevailed there, particularly at Lagos, where nearly a qnarter of the European population died of fever and dysentry during two months end- ing July 4th.

Vienna, Aug. 12.

The Politische Corresponden: announces that an uprising of Mahamond Dan fanatics has occurred at Liono in Herzegovinia. The ‘Turkish commandant was killed. The troops made common eause with the insurgents and marched with them on Shuplie.

Nicotarmmrr, Aug. 12. A Russian torpedo cutter exploded in the harbor to-day, killing thirty-four persona. BomsBay, Aug. 12.

; The Indian Government has received in- formation confirming the report of the ar-

ival of the Russian mission at Cabul with

letters from the Czar. The mission was received with high honors. It is believed the Russians wish to establish themselves on the north-west of the Affghanistan. Their representatives at Cabul speak of their de- sire to open up a trade with Affghanistan. They will visit Uerat and the Western frontier.

An English mission, escorted by cavalry, will leave Peshawor for Cabul in Septem- ber.

A Vienna despatch to the Times says offi- cial intelligence is received that insurgents are encountering the defile of Vranduk, where formidable resistance was expected, and are retreating to Sera jevo.

Orrawa, Aug. 12.

The Orange Young Britons’ celebration bere to day caused several rows. At one time fears of of a general riot existed. Ten arrests were made. The foot guards were ordered out, as it is feared that a distur- bance will take place when Montreal Britons will leave for home late to-night. ‘Twelve hundred Orangemen paraded in Toronto to- day. No disturbance reported there.

SECOND DESPATCH.

Arrests still continue to be made, and deuse crowds occupy the streets. An immense number of men assembled at the Railway Station, presumably to prevent the Orange display and departure of the Mon- treal Young Britons. They did not turn up, however, but.got out of town in small numbers by Beeling’s bridge, where a special train took them away before the mob got wind of their change of route. The city is still very unquiet,

On Tuesday, the 23rd ultimo, after a tong and painful illness, which she bore with Christian resignation, Harriet Jane, aged 28 years, the beloved wife of Isaac Wright, of Carlton, Lot 27.

Kay, aman sentenced to the St. John Penitentiary for life thirteen years ago, has been pardoned by the Dominion Govern ment. He is about 60 years of age, and and belongs to Westmoreland County, N.B.

Tae Opp Friiows’ festivities in Pictou yesterday passed off very pleasantly. Nearly four hundred of the brethren took part in the procession. ‘The excursionists who left this city on Monday, returned at 4 o’clock this morning. '

Tue rifle competition at Range was commenced to-day. a large attendance of competitors and spectators. The shooting is something bet- ter than heretofore, and if the weather re- mains fine there will be very close con- tests for all prizes.

CounrerFeit $2 notes of the Union Bank are still in circulation. Yesterday one of these notes were passed in the store of Mr. John McEachern, Merchant, Queen Street, and another in the store of Mr. S. W. McMurray. Both notes are exactly alike. They beara very ancient appear- ance and have,no doubt, been in circulation for some time. The number on the face of the note is very uneven, and the word “‘two”’ on the back is almost a daub. Bank-tellers can readily detect them by their shoddy ap- pearance and also by the quality of the

paper.

WE are requested by the Clerk of the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court to correct a statement made by Councillor Hooper, at the City Council meeting, last evening. The Councillor stated—during his remarks on the reduction of the Police foree—that the cases before the Mayistrate’s Court had decreased from twenty cases per day, at the time theincrease of Policemen was made to twenty per mouth, at the present time. This is entirely incorrect. The Clerk in- forms us that he never remembers seeing 20 cases before the Court in one day; and that since October last, the average number of police cases before the Court is eighty per month, besides cases of summons on private complaint, which average about thirty per month.

ALL the great professional single scullers of America met at Barrie, Ont., on Monday last to take part in the regatta. There were ten entries for the single scuil race: Hanlon, Ross, Ed. Ross, Morris, Elliot, Plaisted, Hosmer, McKee, Coulter and Luther. After the men were got into line with some trouble they were started by a gun shot, Wallace Ross, Plaisted and Elliot taking the lead, fol- lewed hard by Hanlon, Luther and Hosmer, Ross then won the lead all to himself, showing staying power and compelling Plaisted and. Elliot to moderate their speed. He pulled 36 to the minute, Plais and Hosmer 38, and Hanlan (who was still behind) 36. At the half mile, Ross still led with a strong stroke, with Plaisted second and Hanlon third, while Hosmer was close to him, Luther fifth and Ed- ward Ross about giving up. At the three quarter post Ross was one length ahead of | Hanlan, who was now second, and both were oulling 32, at the mile the positions were sim- ilar, Ross steered out of his course, and in turn ing Hanlan overhauled him, and led from the buoy andfinished six lengths ahead, Ross second and Hosmer third.
