It’s not surprising that a lot of people on campus are starting to ask, “What is CFS, anyway?”

The Canadian Federation of Students is Canada’s largest student organization, with 95,000 members in 62 post-secondary institutions across the country. Only two years old, CFS is the result of an affiliation between two former groups, the National Union of Students (NUS) and the Association of Student.- Council (AOSC).

As a prospective member, UPEI is nearing the end of a two-year period in which it receives the services of CFS without paying fees. If a referendum is not held this spring, or if the students return a “no” vote, UPEI will cease to be a member in the organization. If students decide to accept full member- ship in CFS, they will con- tinue to receive CFS services, but will pay $4 in their Stu- ;

Students deal drugs as / recession drags

MONTREAL (CUP) — Student drug dealers at Concordi University say economic hardship is forcing them into thei line of work. I

And as more students become young entrepreneurs, the security supervisor at Sir George campus has announced hi squad is cracking down on the illegal drug trade.

So far, one non-student has been arrested, but most campus dealers do not seem worried by the crackdown.

‘ Nick, a long time dealer, said most security guards “kno who we (dealers) are, and usually look the other way.” He sai one security guard even bought a gram of hash from him thi year. . Nick said most of the business involves hash, although increased amounts of cocaine have been sold recently. In good week, Nick said he can clear $400.

Many students seem to have turned to dealing just t support themselves.

“I’m not taking any trips to Florida with my profits,” sai Mike. a history student, who just started dealing this year.

“I’m paying for my tuition, rent, and books with the mone I make.”

Mike couldn’t get a loan or bursary this year, so he had I come up with some alternative. “Dealing seemed to be th logical choice. ”

, While some students turn to dealing to fund their education other students fight the “dealer” stereotype.

According to International Student Advisor Elizabet Morey, Iranians at Concordia have always been labelled dealers. __ ’

_ She admits that while some Iranians do deal, they are a sm minority of the more than 60 Iranians in the university.

“Most have jobs and don’t deal,” she said. “But becau of the stereotype, they are all blamed for i .”

One Iranian student conﬁrmed Morey's account. “I’m tir of walking through the halls and being asked if I have an hash,” he said. “Most of us don’t sell drugs and nev would.”
