Now that smelt fishing forms quite an in- dustry and the fish command fair prices in foreign markets, there should be some law to prevent such wholesale destruction, es- pecially at this season of the year, as the tish ascend the river to spiswn. capitate

fierriss SH g1us.—The Halifax Chronicle save:—H. H. Earle, the inventor of the marine distreas shell, was a passenger by the steamer Mirande from New York on Monday night. He has beew visiting Washington and New York in the interests of his invention, and is now on his way home to St. John's, Nfld. Coming out of New York this time he saluted the Whitestone lighthouse with one of his signals. Captain Jackman, of the iil- fated steamer Plover, who is also on board the Miranda on his way home, was greatly in- terested in the exhibition, as previously he had not thought very favorably of the signals He says that had he had some of them at the time his ship was wrecked he could have been rescued much sooner than he was, as another steamer passed some distance off and was unable to see his flags. Captain Lessman, of the Miranda, is also enthusiastic over the shells, and thinks they are one of the greatest marine inventions of the age, and will prove of igestimable benefit to mariners. Mr. Karle yoes to England shortly to introduce his sig- nals before Lloyds. [The Mr. Earle referred to above is a brother to Mr. S. N. Earle, of this city. |

Philharmonic Society.

We learn with great pleasure that the meetings of the above society will be re- sumed on Tuesdsy evening next, and that the Committee on Music have ordered and received some sixty eopies of the * Crea- tion,” which magnificient work will form the basis of study for the next few months. ‘There is yet room for some more members, and any persons wishing to become — identi- fied with the Society should send in their names at onee to any of the Committee, #0 that they may be in a position to take part in the opening practice. We trust that all persons interested in the welfare of the Society will bear in mind tbat the re- hersals take place on Tuesday evenings’ be- tweea eight and nine o'clock, and if pos- sible, will let nothing interfere which will retard the progress of this most excellent

institution.
