Twelve witnesses were heard yes- terday at Summerside before Mag- istrate R. S. Hinton, Q.C., bringing

21 the number of witnesses that ave been called in connection with the preliminary hearing of Wal- lace Palmer, Borden, charged with arson in connection with a fire on April 14th which did considerable damage to a motion picture thea- tre in Borden which was owned and operated by the accused.

At adjournment yesterday after- noon it was agreed by the Court and colmsel that the witness who was then on the stand would be the only witness to be called on Friday. and that the remaining witnesses would be heard next Tuesday.

Elmer Perry. H. of Borden. test- ified that he had been a ticket taker at Borden theatre. and the morning of the day of the fire had imet at the tlierlire together with the accused and Lloyd Harvey. He had started the furnace fire to dry olit the building which they were about to scrub out. The accused la- ter left for an early dinner. and at- lter finishing the scrubbing. the lwlinc-so and H.m'vey had gliie mit- slde to burn dead grass around f.hP theatre.

The accused who returned in the meantime had hclped with brooms ;to beat out the gmss flames and :also the fire on at least A couple of lfcnce posts that had caught fire. Accused and Harvey had driven away and he proceeded home. About five minutes later some one had come to the house to say the theatre was on fire.

Charles R. Plant. Moncton. chief special agent for Maritime Fire Under-writers Investigation Bureau of Canada, was on the stand when court adjourned. and is expected to complete his testimony on Friday

He said he had been in his line of blisinem for 36 years. and in the last 23 years has investigated 1569 fires. He identified photos and dia- grains of the building. and describ- ed his observations of the building and fire damage. In answer to a question from Mr. J.0.C. Camp- .bell. Q. 0. who is representing the Crown in this case, Mr. Plant said that in his opinion the fire had started at ceiling level at the in- tersection of the main building and the annex, in the north east corner. He said no switches or wires were ln evidence on the walls about the spot where he presumed the fire had started.

The Rev. C. A. Simpson. M.A.. D.D. (Oxon) had the honor and distinction of preaching at. his- lorical Wcsfminsler Abbey on the cvenlng of August 17th. It is at this Abbey that past Kings and Queens of England have been crowned: and where Queen Eliza- beth will officlally be proclaimed Queen of England in June of 1963. Rev. C. A. Simpson who has been visiting England for the past month has preached at several well known churches in London. On Sunday. August loth he preach- ed at St. Cuthberth Phllbeach Gardens; on the 17th at All Saints at High Mass and then at West- minster Abbey in the evening. This past Sunday Rev. C. A. Simpson ended his visit, preach- ing at the renowned St. Paul's Cathedral at evensong. He sails from Liverpool on September 8th to resume his duties as Professor of Old Testament and sub-dean of the General Theological semin- ary. New York.

The first sessions of a two-day local teachers” convention was held at the Summerside High School Audito'ium yesterday morning and and a ternoon.

In the morning the meeting opened with the reading of the minutes by the secretary. Norman Ford. Miss 'Mary McLure, the pres- ident of the local Association, gave an inspirational address, em- phasizing the fact that though the teaching profession was not very well paid, it was a very important profession nevertheless. She re- viewed the activities of the year. and cited two important results of the Federation's efforts, an increase in teachers” salaries. and an im- provement. in the pension plan.

speaking particularly to new teachers. He gave them a helpful talk on procedure, stressing the importance of the three P's. pat- lence, punctuality. and persever- ance. Mr. Malcolm Macxenzic. chief supervisor for Prince Edward Island. spoke on the new course of studies, which is just off the press, and will be distributed to the teacliers as soon as possible, He mentioned several new books that are on the course this year, and explained why the new 'gcogi'aphy text has not been put on the auth- orized list as yet. It will be in the hands of the teachers this year. and they are expected to inform the Department of Education of their opinions of the new text. Mr. MacKenzle expressed the opinion that if the teachers knew more about school administration. and pwcre able to advise their , local lschool hoards. it would increase their prestige in the community.

Mr. .1. R. Murphy gave an inter- esting paper and demonstration on the teaching of English. He warned against the American influence on our young English students, stating that the Americans are not very strict about their choice of English. lie showed by a blackboard dem- onstration that teachers vary greatly in marking a subjcctivc type of examination.

The Assembly of teachers their broke up into seven smaller groups. .to lscliss questions pertinent to modern it-aching methods. The chairmen of the several groups lat- er reported to the full assembly on the findings of each group, and some of their conclusions will like- ly appear in resolutions to be drmvn in one of today's sessions.

In the absence of the teacher who was supposed to discuss the teaching of arithmetic, four Fed- crallon members gave brief talks on teaching methods in arithmetic They were Rev. Sister Mary Peter. Miss Estelle Bolvness, Messrs. Davis Lidstone and Norman Mac- Donald. with the Presidents an- nouncement that questlons for the question box were to 'be passed in at this morning's session, the meet- ing adjourned.
