Why he Went to Attica.

On the 25th of February, of the present year, the Prince Imperial wrote to M, Rouher explaining the motives that had led him to resolve on going tothe Zulu war. The communication was dated from Chiselhurst, and was as follows: My Dear M. Rover :--_

[am about to leave Europe, and my ab- sence may continue for some mouths. I| have too many faithful friends in France for me to remain silent as to the reasons of my depar- ture. For eight years I have been England’s guest. LI completed my education in one of her military schools, and have kept up my counection with the British army by joining it on several occasions, during its great mancuvres. The war Great Britain is now carrying on at the Cape of Good Hope has lately assumed « much more serious aspect than git had previously. I felt anxious to watch the operations, and I sail in two days.

In France, where, thank Heaven, party spirit has not extinguished the military spirit, people will comprehend that [am anxious to share the fatigues and dangers of those troops among whom | have so many comrades: The time | shall devote in assisting in this struggle of civilization agains barbarity will not be lost to me.

My thoughts, whether [ am far or near, will constantiy turn to France. I shall watch the phases she will constaatly pass through with interest and without anxiety, for | am convinced that God protects her!

I trust that during my absence the partizans of the Imperial cause will remain united and confident, and will continue to hold before the county the spectacle of a party which, faithful to its doctrines, remains constantly animated by the most ardent patriotism.

The Canada General Assembly an Hymns.

The Canada Assembly, last week, ac- cepted the report of a committee on hymn books, which contained the following :—

In all approved hymna beoks there are about 1000 different hymns, from which the committee selected 253, from other sources they selected 25, making altogether 278. Besides these they selected 11 hymns for the young and il doxologies, chiefly from the hymn boecks already meationed. The hymns thus selected were sent to pres- byteries to be considered by them, and re- ports have been received from all the pres- byteries except six, namely the presbyteries et Sydney, Newfoundland, Hamilton, Lon- den, Chatham and .Huron. Some of the reports were sent to the Committee and some to the General Assembly. Of the presbyteries reporting, sixteen express general approval; two disapprove; seven recommend the matter to be recommited for another year; three express \o opi. ion, simply recommending certain alterations and additions.

The report was received, and the com- mittee re-appointed with a view of making their work more perfect and reporting to next General Assembly, when, no doubt, a Hymn Book of a suitable character will he adopted.

ON Saturday evening, the I4th inst., a rig ger on board the schooner ‘‘Arizimbo,” at Calais, Me., fell from the cross-trees through the main hatch to the keelson, a distance of 60 feet. Strange to say he lived some days at least, though it seems impossible that he

An Ottawa Sensation.

On the 21st inst., whilst a farmer was passing a wooden house on the Russel Road, Uttawa, eccupied by a woman named Bella Hood, he observed a female form stretched out on the step. He at first thought that Miss Hood was sleeping, but on a closer ex- amination noticed blood on one of her legs, which protruded from under the dress. In company with a ffiend he approached the house, and, to his horror, discovered that she was dead, and that both inside and outside the house there were blood stains. it appeared as though some brutal murder had been committed, but further develope- ments led to the conclusion that death was caused from hemorrhage. The woman was enciente. An inquest was immediately held, and the following verdict returned : that deceased came to her death from hem- orrhage froma punctured wound in the vagina, but whether inflicted by herself or some unknown party, or by accident, is un. known to the jury. setsiiineanineot- ens

An “ISLANDER” writes to the St. John Sun: ‘In the astonishing list of ‘‘Perley’s wrecks’ which mark the coast line of these Lower Provinces of the Dominion, I do not see that your correspendent ‘‘Econemist”’ mentions the misplaced and poorly protected breakwater at Souris, in this ‘‘ught little Island.” This structure was only recently completed at very great cost. yet it is al- ready down for repairs and promises to at- tain notoriety quite equal to that of Cow Bay in Cape Breton, to which your corres- pondent directs particular attention. Al- ready has a large sum been expended upon it during the present year, and a further sum of $5,000 was voted by Parliament for ‘‘repairs” during the coming year.”
