The Go-As-You-Please. To the Editor of the EK vraminer.
SiR, | see by the last two or three issues of the EXAMINER that the sporting fraternity is considerably excited over the late walking match at Summerside. Mr. Hart, who backed the Unknown, declares that it was not a ‘ put-up-job,” and that Clow never saw the Unknown before the contest took place. Another writer, who signs himself ‘* Pedestrian,” and who seems to have confidence in his ability to prove what he states, says that Clow did see the Unknown before the match, and that he was even living at Clow’s at North Wilt- shire, for some time before the walk took place. If this is true, tt seems rather strange that Mr. Hart should make the statement he’did, especially as he is the nan who issued the challenge to Clow and transacted all the Unknown’s business here in connection with the race. But whether Mr. Hart’s statement is trne or false, par- ties residing at North Wiltshire teil a pretty little story which dves not exactiy coincide with his letter. It is reported there that the Unknown was brought here by Clow, who took him to his father’s resi- dence, and introduced him to the neighbors as a new farm-servant that he had hired in town; that Clow had a track built for him- self to practice on, and that every evening the young men of the vicinity—the farm- servant among the number—would gather there for the purpose of trying their speed. Sometimes a prize of fifty cents or a dollar would be put up to be competed for by these amatuer pedestrians, but some how or other the money was always won by Clow’s new man; that as soonas Mr. Harts challenge was accepted, the new man dis- appeared from North Wiltshire and was not seen there again until a few days after the walking match at Summerside. These are the reports which are going the rounds Mr. Editor, but whether there is any truth in them or not I cannot say. If true, the public—especially the Summersiders—have been gulled in a most rascally manner. If not true, then a great injustice is being done the promoters of the match. Bufat

I see that the Patriot has also taken the matter up, but I do not think it has made things look any brighter for all concerned. in Saturday’s issue the editor of the Patriet in speaking of Mr. Harts letter says-—‘*The fact is that so many disreputable persons are interested in these sporting affairs and mixed up with them in one way or another, that it is dangerous for any one wishing to maintain a character for fair dealing and regpectability to have anything to do with them. Mr. Hart may have told nothing but the truth, but we venture to say that his letter has not converted a single sceptic.”’
The Patriot says that Mr. Hart may have told the truth, but the inference to be drawn from the above extract, is that such is hardly the case. Yours, etc.,
