A domestic filter, it appears, i worse than useless unless it is boile: and s#teriliz-d every twenty-four hours. We have been accustomed to boil ou water, but to boil our filter will be a new departure in domestic economy. The explanation of the professor’s as- tonishing statements is that the harm- less bacteria which abound in ordin- ary drinking water are the sworn foes of the typhoid and cholera germs, and promptiy kill them off whenever the) intrude themselves into their society, but both these microbes can lve and flourish in pure distilled water, from Which their inveterate enemies hav been banish d. “People h: ve been add ing something like a hundred-fo'd,” said the professor genially, “to the bac- teria in their water by filtering it.’ Thoroughly sterilized water, after passing through a new filter only in use a weck, hes been found to contain two hundred thousand b cteria to the cubie centimetre. Kent, of Ottawa, from Bright’s disease. Although the merite of the case have not been | openly discussed at any of the meetings of the medical society, there has been a good deal of private conference and the impres— sion which the report of the recovery has made is evidenced in the fact that a good many physicians haye prescribed Dodd’s Kidney Pills in their private practice.
