Ottawa, July 13. In the Tarte McGreevy investigation Saturday the examination of Nicholas Con- nolly was continued.

Colonel Amyot stated that Connolly had been tried for perjury in Quebec.

Connolly said it was false and said that unless Amyot apologized he would settle it with him outside. Amyot then apoligized explaining that the charge of perjury had been mado, but that the grand jury threw out the indictment. Connolly positively swore that no money had ever been paid by his firm to Langevin or Thomas Me- Greevy, nor had Murphy or Robert Me- ‘xreevy ever claimed to have paid them money. Thomas McGreevy did not know that his brother Robert was interested in the firm. Connolly contradicted the whole of Murphy’s testimony as to the payment to Sir Hector, or his son, er his son-in-law.

Fatal Railway Disaster.

Woonsocker, R. 1., July 10,—Stephen C, Saunders, night watchman at the Social Manufacturing Company’s mill, was shot probably fatally at 4.30 this morning by James Pickford, overseer for the company for the past 33 years. Pickford was accus- tomed to come to the mill at an early hour to arrange his day’s work and has had sev- eral quarrels with the night watchman. This morning he said to Saunders that he (Saunders) had married a disreputable woman. Saunders threw a bobbin at him and turned to walk away when Pickford drew a revolver and fired, the ball entering Saunders’ back and penetrating the right lung. Pickford was held in $5,000 for as- sault with a dangerous weapon.

Sat? Lake Crry, Utah, July 10.—S W. Welborn, a sporting man, committed sui- cide last evening by means of sulphate of morphine. Among his effects was a unique letter addressed to ‘‘ the coroner and the public in general.” To save all trouble and controversy as tu the cause and means of his death, the writer stated that the act was his own doing and premeditated :

‘*T have arrived at the conclusion,” he con- tinued, ‘‘that my life isa failure, and that the surest way to avoid a further disappoint- ment and trouble is by the morphine route to the place where every man gets a square deal and the cards break even forsquare men. I bear no ill-feeling toward any one, and trust my associates will see that Iam decently laid away and that a notice of my death appears in the St. Louis papers is my last request. (ood-by all.”

The deceased was 32 years of age and a resident of St. Louis.

Hauirax, July 11.—The cod fishery was poor to-day at English and Fox Bays, Anticosti; good at Thunder River, St. John River and Long Point, Que.; fair at Perce and Newport, but only poor at Grand River and Paspebiac. 0 reporis in from Caraquet, N. B.. but the fishing is reported good at Point Escuminac. Fair hauls were made at Margaree and Arichat, but few were taken at any other points on theCape Breton coast. In Nova Scotia the catch was fair at Port Medway, and good at Liverpool, but poor at all other points heard from. Herring very good at Fox Bay and good at Perce, Que., fair at New- port Point, but poor fat Grand River and Paspebiac; good at Arichat and Margaree, C. B.; fair at Port Hawkesbury. No catches reported on the shores of Nova Seotia, excepting at Pubnico, where large Guantities of them were taken in traps and nets; mackerel very good at Miminigasb, P, E. Island, good at Nail Pond, Horse Head and Tignish, and fair at

loomfield, Fair catches by nets at St. Peter's and Hawkesbury, C. B., but poor at all other points in Cape Breton. Good signs are reported at Lunenburg and Liver- pool, N. S., and very good hauls in traps and netsat Pubnico and John’s Island.

An audience of over two thousand witnessed it in Dr. Wild's Congregational church, Toronto. The St. Thomas (Oat. ) Journal thus refers to his visit to that city: “The Ladies’ Aid of the First Methodist Church netted a very handsome sum from the entertainment given last night, Feb. 27th, 1889, by Mr. Struthers. The large church was well filled, and the _wadience was evid nt'y excecdingly gratifec by the entertaiument. Mr. Struthers coliection of views is large and well chosen, and his app@r- atus certainly of the best, and the entertain- ment equal to the finest. Music was —s appropriate to the scenes by the choir, which assisted in making a beautiful entertainment throughout.” Mr. Struthers will be in the Lyceum, Monday, July 20th, For further particulars see advertisement.
