Niger territory, has returned from a photograpbic expedition in the Gold Cuoas', Hinterland, extending over four yeare.

Mr. McCann penetrated a country which hod hitherto never been visited by a white man. He gives a descriptionof a most remarkable lake, which, although only thirty five milee from Coomassie, has only been visited by one or two white men. It is called Bosomsbi, meaning “God water,” andis held sacred by the Ashanteegs. “When my guide told me of the wonders ofthis lake,” said Mr. McCann,“ I re- eolved to visit it and get some pictures. In this ] was very successful. It is twelve miles in diamee-, but its depth ne one knows. The Asbantee King every year drowned 100 of hie slaves in the lake asa sacrifice to the water god, The bodies were never cast up again, and I think they must have beeu eaten by fish. In the breeding season shoals of dead fish are thrown up and collected by the natives. No canoe is allowed on it, and the Ashan-~ tees keep it sacred from avy kin¢i of pol- lution, There are logs or poles on it, and the natives get astride these and paddle with their bands. The chief eventually put the matter off good-natured- ly by saying he supposed “white man pre- ferred white man to eat inetead of black man.”

Carnival at Souris.

The second carnival, which took place in the Souris Skating rick, was fairly well attended. The several pieces of mausie furnished by the Souris Cornet Band were exceptionally well rendered, and fome very pretty costumes were to be seen. Matanzas, March 2.—The banquet tendered here t: Gen. Maximo Gomez was briilisot affair and we!! attended, although the Bpaniards were not invited. The Junta patrioc:,'he organization which had charge of the enteriaiument, purpoes ly refrained from inviting Spaniards, which displeased the Cuban commander. Several epeeches were delivered by the guests, and the audience did vet respond in the manner expected, by reason of the absence of the Sp:nish element. The banquet was given in the theatre, the guests numbered 200, and 4,000 epeciators were present.

The boxes were crowded with ladies be— longing to the best circies cf society, and the public generally crow led the four tiers of galleries, Gen. Wilson sat on ihe right of Gen. Gomez, and the Cuban general Betancourt was seated on his left.

A picture of Geo, Washington was prn- minently displayed on the al. The sveeches began at 10 o’c'ock. Seuor Labostida, during the course of his re- marks, said the authorities at Washington would never govern the country against ite wi'l, a remark which was loudly cheer ed. The house also cheered President McKinley.

Senor Riviera referred glowing!y to Washington, and was loudly cheered Senor Sulio Oritz, president of the Junta welcomed Gen. Gomez to Matanzas. The Cuban Commander anewered, thanked his hosts and referred feelingly tothe dark days of the revolution.
