says :~-‘‘One of the oldest natives of this Island died at Townsend 1. Dorner, in this County, on the Sth inst. When quite a
young man, Mr. Townseud settled on a farm at the Corner. Sheritly aiter he chosed fer himself a partner in the person of Ann Mont- gomery ot Bedeque. He carried on a mercan- cile*business for over 50 years, and during his lifetime filled some impor tant offices. He was toad Commissioner for a number of years ; he also occupied the position of high Sheritf tor the County; he was appointed lostinaster of the first Post Office established in this County —a position trom which he was never removed until the hour of his death, When
Mr. Townsend was first made Postmaster, the mails were carried on horseback, and
sometimes on the carrier's enjoyed the best of health, which blessing was continued to him up to his jast days. Un the Tuesday before his death he could read the smailest print without glasses. Dur- ing his busimess career in life he did a large credit business, but was never known te op- press the poor. On Sunday, the Sth instant, Jobn ‘Townsend, Esq., departed this life, sur rounded by his family and respected by the whole country, at the good old age of 90
