NEW YORK, Oct. 28—(APi—The stock market. took the worst beat- ing in the past month today. Steels were among the hardest hit but al- m-ist every group had its quota of minus signs. Declines ranged to an outside of around 3 points although most were around a point or less.

The last-hour flurry in western oils pulled Home Oli ahead to a high of 10 7-8, u gain of 3-4. Okaltu and Commonwealth Petroleum were also strong and Anglo-Can- adian rose 22 cents at $2.95. Royal- ite dipped 3-4 at 26.

The exchanges closing index showed golds up .36 at 87.01, base metals down .60 ut 107.38, wcstcrn oils up 1.39 at 46.74.

Golds listed 57 gains, 5O losses, 41 unchanged; base metals, 11 gains, 13 losses, 7 unchanged; west- ern olls, 13 gains, 5 losses, 7 un- changed.
