an extra in a Chicago moving pic- ture studio, by her forceful, realistic acting, she gained 1m- Iirst contract with Vitagraph who was producing pictures based upon the short stories of William Sidney Porter (O Henry) whose famous short stories were admirably suit- ed to the needs oi‘ the motion pic- tures.

“The Sheik” and the “Son of the Sheik" are probably her best known pictures. Other outstanding suc- cesses are "Forbidden Fruit," "The Affairs oi’ Anatole," "The Ten Commandments." Besides being a brilliant character actress, Miss Ayres is the possessor of a well cul- tivated voice, which critics every- where are praising.

In the period of five years in which she produced most of her pictures she received on an aver- age one hundred letters a day‘ from fans all over the world and has mailed more than one and one hall’ million photographs of herself to her fans.

Her popularity with the public was so great that Paramount sign- ed her for a. long term contract which proved very profitable to them, as she was a box-office at- traction that every theatre man- ager throughout the world was al- ways anxious to get. Paramount, appreciating her talent and popu- larity, featured her as leading lady in a great many of their road show attractions. Be- lore completing her Broadway presentation Miss Ayres signed a contract with a Hollywood pro- ducer, the director of which is one of the most famous on the con- llnent.

However, to satisfy the motion picture fans, who have been long waiting for such an opportunity, and to realize an early ambition to travel, Miss Ayres consented t0 ulake n tour of the leading theatres on the Continent in order to make
