| Mr. Biake’s Infiuence Thrown on the Side of Liquor.
The Montreal Witness (Opposition) says ; ‘* There are times when a blunder is _ really worse than acrime. Mr. Blake is one of the most conscientious of men, but he has committed a moral blunder which, unless Heaven forfend,@Zmay easily prove more mischievious to his country than ten thousand crimes. He has thrown his mighty moral influence on the side of the liquor makers and liquor sellers, every one of whom will rejoice exceedingly in his attitude on the prohibition question. He has thrown his mighty moral weight in the path of prohibition. For every broken life and every broken heart over which the country will have to weep during that post- ponement, Mr. Blake will be morally responsible. He has theories of law and he follows them : he makes no room in his reasoning for the conclusions reached by men who are actually at work trying to save men, who have labored in anguish for the purpose, who have tried moral suasion till it seemed positively foolish in the pre- sence of licensed temptation. Here are, on the side, the whole host of religious and the benevclent who have been forced to the conclusion that so long as temptations are publicly, and with the countenance of the community, held forth to our growing boys, so long will a proportion of them be brought to ruin, and so long will the com- munity be responsible for that ruin. On the other side are the Sybarite philosophers who deplore evil at a distance and have theories about it, and the bar-room moral- ists who glibly proclaim themselves the trae temperance reformers, a claim which they share with the Montreal Herald. The deep and settled conviction of all the

religious classes counts for nothing with Mr. Blake against some theory A his. But what sort of even theoretic righteousness is there in a
system by which the state licenses mills to be fed day by day with the bright youth of the land anc remorselessly to crush their souls out, and receive revenue from their destruction? When the earnest women of Ohio had labored long and vainly for the salvation of those who were dear to them and those whom they pitied, they went with earnest words and much prayer to the tavern-keepers, thinking that if only they saw the evil they were doing the} would desist. With a few exceptions, which made no permanent difference in the volume of the business, these simply replied that they had paid for their licenses. Their business and they individually were guar- anteed respectable by the State, and as long
law no one had any fault to find. What could these women then do but turn to their own husbands and brothers and sons, and plead with them that this public in- famy should no longer be permitted. It is for a continuance of this iniquity that Mr. Blake has declared. As was said to Queen Esther when a similar license system had been inaugurated for the destruction of her people, salvation will arise to the people from another quarter.”
An Amusing Case.
An amusing suit came before the Division court, Toronto, a few days ago, County Constable King suing Mrs. Burton for $70 commission for procuring her a husband. Plaintiff alleges that he was commissioned by defendant to engineer a scheme for get- ting Mr. Burton, a well known citizen, to marry her, and also to get a handsome young widow, who was acting as Burton’s housekeeper, to give up her pesition. King was successful im arranging the marriage, but failed to induce the housekeeper to leave Burton's employ. It appeared from other evidence that after the marriage Mr. and Mrs. Burton did not live happily to- gether, and finally the wife discovered that the housekeeper was administering to Mr. Burton a certain love philter. Mrs. Burton procured a bottle of this wonderful mixture, which she administered to her husband by pouring small doses upon his coat tail. But as it had no effect she com- menced to punish him in various ways, till tinally he deserted her. Defendant alleges that her solicitor brought about the mar- riage between herself and Mr. Burton, and not plaintiff. Judgment was reserved.

Ever since the Canadian Pacific Co. took over the Government telegraph system in British Columbia they have been perfect- ing it until it is now in the same high state of excellence as are the other lines of the Company. In order to test its efficiency as a great trans-continental circuit the Com- pany recently placed London, England, and New Westminster and Victoria practically in one unbroken circuit, thus demonstra- ting that should the Imperial authorities in London at any time wish to place them- selves in instantaneous connection with their naval authorities on the Pacific coast it could be done by means of the Canadian Pacitic Telegraph. At about 3 o'clock Montreal time New Westminster, B. C., was placed in direct circuit with the Mac- kay-Bennett cable office in New York and after exchanging greetings, the New York office told New Westminster he would at- tach their main atlantic wire and that as soon as he gave ‘the signal” he was to call Canso, N. 8. The signal was given, and Caaso and New Westminster exchanged greetinzs with as great facility as though they had been as near each other as To- renio and Montreal. The distance is about 3,500 miles of land line and 1,000 miles of cable or 4,500 miles in all. At 12.20 p. m. New Westminster, B. C., time, that office sent the following telegram to London and in five minutes received the attached re- ply :—

sends greetings to Old Westminster. 12.20 p. m., ourtime. Weather cloudy; light
rain ; ther. 44° above.” REPLY.
‘* Old Westminster to New Westminster. London time 8.22 p. m., Greenwich. Old Westminster sends kindly greetings to its younger namesake. Weather here is heavy, fog ; temperature about 32° above. The city is enveloped, but about three miles outside the weather is clear.”
‘*New Westminster to Old Westmin- ster—we heartily reciprocate the kindly greetings from our big brether. The work- ing of this wonderful circuit demonstrates the feasibility of this being the most direct and practical route between England and the East. Before another 12 months have passed, we hope to be regularly handl- ing the cable business between England and the East via this route. Please give us

**London to Winnipeg :—8.22 p. m.—We have heard a great deal about your wonder- ful city, I cannot but admire its marvellous progress. Your city is bound to be the centre of avast population. Let us hope that the many thousands that will leave these shores to find homes in your country will grow up in the path marked out in your telegram.”
Other telegrams were exchanged between the officials of the different companies at New Westminster, Winnipeg, Montreal, New York, Canso and London, when the circuit was closed and New Westminster was put in circuit with Buffalo, who gave him over the Baltimore & Ohio Telegraph Co’s. lines a direct connection with New Orleans. The operator working in New Orleans happened to be an old Montrealer, knowing the operators at Montreal, Winni- peg and New Westminster, and they had quite a gossip together over old times. The thermometer at New Orleans was 75 above zero and the operator there seemed sur- prised to learn that the weather at Winni- peg was so mild.
The distance from New Westminster to New Orleans is estimated at about 5,700 miles. This circuit and the cable would give one some idea of the vastness of the Canedian Pacific Co’s. telegraph and its con- nections.

In the Italian Chamber of Deputies afew days ago, Signor Ricotti, Minister of War, after reading the military budget, declared that Italy was now in a position to mobilize and victual 400,0U0 troops, not counting the reserves. The work of providing the troops with repeating rifles has been begun, and 1,000,000 of them would be in use in 1888. Though at the present time there was nothing to threaten the peace of Italy, it was useless to ignore the warlike indica- tions in the East. He believed Italy would be well prepared in the event of an out- break in politics.
