—A curious result of the South African by the Montreal Gazette has been the diminution of crime in the Qld Country. It is remarked all over that ,at the recent assizes at Mao~ chester, which is in the centre of a very large population aod usually offers from 50 to 100 criminal ca-es, there were only ten. The reason is that so many men have been sent out of the country that, trade being good, there is an active demand for labor, and work is plentiful. The sociolegists aet down “‘lack of employment ” as one of the chief incentives of crime.

of the New Dominion Dairying Campany was held in their factory on Tnesday the 6th inst. The Company was well repre~ sented by shareholders and patrons. The Secretary, Mr. G. Wilson submitted his report outlining the work of the past year, which was unanimously adopted.

A dividend of 8 per cent was declared oa all paid up stock, after paying a debt of $500 on the butter plant.

After some routine business regarding the work for the ensuing year, the follow- log board of directors was duly elect- ed by ballot: D Currie, (re-elected); Thos E Marphy, (re-elected) ; Thos Lowther, (re-elected) ; Jas McLean, (re~ elected); D T McEwen, (re-elected ; N D McLean, (re-elected); and A Liviaog- stone

After the rendition of the programme came the sale of baskets for all of waich good prices were realized. They were auctioned by Mr. Malcolm McPhee ia his usual good atyle. Ostrvary.—It i+ with deepest regret that we chronicle the de th of Mra. Jas. R.« McDonald, of Armadale,Lot 42, which occurred oa March 5th, at the advanced age of [78 years. The deceased possessed mary noble traits of character and ty her ever obliging and genial disposition made for bereelf many friends. Her death will he sincerely mouroed by all who had the pleasure of Sher acquaintance. During her illness Mre. McDonald was fortified by the lasf rites of tne Catholic church by her kied pasior, Rev. Peter Curran. On Wednesday, March Tih, her remains were conveyed to St. Margaret’s churchy where the last sad sites were performed b, the rey. pnstor, after which her body was laid to rest in the cemetery. Vigorous animation, concordant unanimity, and business-like enthusiasm were the characteristics of the Literal- Vonservative Convention at Bradalbane on Tuesday, 6th inst, The convention, was Composed of five representatives from each poll in the First District of Queen’s and many other interested parties, and the object was to nominate two candidates to contest the district at the comiog local election. Anim sted by the zeal that is al ways dispiayed by energetic workers in a good cause, the delegates transacted the business of the meeting so vigorously and so unanimously as to place this conyen- tion on record as one Of the most signifi« cant that the First District bas seen for ysars. Hon. Wm. Campbell and Mr. D. B. McLeod were proposed as candidates for the coming election, and when the pro position was put to the large and repre- sentative meeting oot one voice was heard to dissent.

Before and after the nomination speeches were aa the candidates named and by Messrs H Hogan, Hope River, J J Bradley, Kelly‘s Cross, Dr. R McNeill, Stanley, aud Arthur Simpson, Bay View. All were strong in their condemnation of the scandalous and ruinous policy of the party now in office(but not in power),— the party that nas saddled on this beauti- ful Island a loaa of debt under which ic for years must groan ; the party that has made a scandalous bungle of the Public Works Department, leaving roads aad bridges in an almost impassable condition, aud allowing the inmates of the insane asylum to be badly fed snd almost frczen; the party that has turned the Kducatico Office into a political machine ; the party that has employed every means of bribery asd corruption to secure tie election of their ‘€ heelers” and to induce desertion from the ranks of their opponents; ihe party that has tbe impudence to hang on t> otfice after it. bas lost the sunport of the electorate and in iis dire extremity has to send one man across the ocean and bring

And Whereas, the buildiog of these branch lines bas, at different times and placer, been endoreed by Sir Charles Tup- per, Hoa. G. E. Foster, Blow. J. G. Haggart end Seaator Bowell as the policy of the Conservative party ;

And Whereas, the balding of branch lines to the atoresaid localities would greatly increase the traffic on ibe maia line of the P. E. Island Railway as well as give tbe much-needed acconwmodation to the inhabitants of the localities through which they would pass ;

Therefore Resolved, [hat owr represes- tativee both in the Local Legislature ard in the Dominiow Parliament be urged to use their best endeavors to the end that these branch railways may be speedily constructed.
