Tue remains of the late Walter Bourke, Esq., wife and child, arrived here yesterday for interment in the new cemetery. The coftins were all placed in the Victoria Masonic Hall room for the night. At two to-day the funeral took place from the Lodge. The remains were followed to the railway station by a large number of Masons, who assembled to pay tribute of respect to a deceased member.

A Noreworrny Event. — The corner- stone of Dalhousie College was laid just fifty years ago, the ceremony having been per- formed by the Earl of Daijhousie on St. John’s Day, 1820. The pageant, Provin- cial, Military and Masonic, was as splendid as a combination of the three could produce. What a volume of associations are revived by the recollection of that event !—Halifaxr Chronicle, 25th.

Tue Tea Party at Fort Augustus yester- day passed off very successfully. Although the weather presented a very unpromising appearance, a very large number took tea at the grounds. At the close political speeches were delivered by Messrs. Brecken and Sinclair, and a temperance speech by Mr. P. R. Bowers. Mr. Brecken’s speech was excellent, and was well received by the people of Fort Augustus.

Cricker.—The Phocenix Cricket Club will play a friendly match with a Summer- side eleven, in Victoria Park, on Dominion Day. Wickets to be pitched at 10.35, a.m. The Charlottetown eleven is: F. 8. Long- worth, R. V. Longworth, J. A. Longworth, Hobkirk, L. Yeo, J. H. Yeo, T. H. Finlay, Disney, B. Davies, jr., G. Macleod, Fitz- gerald. We hope the Summerside boys will have an enjoyable time; but we cannot honestly wish them success.

Goop Music.—The streets have been en- liyvened the past two days by the Band of the Hibernian Minstrels, which, under the leadership of Mr. Armstrong, has been out twice a day for parade. The music they furnish is far above the average of the bands which parade under similar circum stances. The leader, Mr. Armstrong, is not quite a Nova Scotian, but his father was well known in Halifax and other parts of Nova Scotia some years ago as a musician of considerable merit, and the instructor of more than one amateur band. — //+. A Terrible Scene.

A WIFE CUTS HER HUSBAND'S HEAD OFF BE- CAUSE HE FINDS A FLY IN THE GRAVY.

A dispatch from Burkeville, Va., to the Cincinnati Hnquirer explains how the town was thrown into a terrible excitement the other day over a domestic tragedy of almost unparalleled atrocity, in which Jennie Mil- ler beheaded her husband, Anderson Miller, while he was at breakfast. It seems that he was of a cool, quiet temper, but she notori- ous asa Tartar. The two had been seated at the table a few minutes when Mr. Miller ventured to remark: ‘‘ Wife, here is a fly in the gravy.” At this Mrs. Miller screamed out, **'That’s the way with you, you are all the time finding fault.” The husband said, ‘Oh, no; I just happened to see the fly and thought I wonld tell you.” The spunky woman replied, ‘‘You’re a liar; flies never get into my gravy.” Words mul- tiplied, and in a little while Mrs. Miller was waltzing around the room, smashing up the furniture. Finally the husband order- ed the wife out of the house. She ran and seized an axe which was on the porch, and rushing back to her husband dealt him a heavy blow on the back of the head while he still sat at the table. He tried to get up, but she repeated the blow, which felled him to the ground. Then, in her brutal rage, she severed head from the body. A guest of Mr. Miilers was up stairs while the bloody work was going on, and he got into the dining room just in time to gee the end of it. As heentered the guilty woman held the head of her husband up, and with an exclamation, dropped it to the floor and fell into a swoon. The news of the murder spread rapidly, and Mrs. Mil- ler was promptly arrested and lodged in jail. The Millers had been married about two years. His parents and friends advised him against the match, on account of her high temper, but little was it dreamed that that the result of the marriage would be so horrible.

Canadian Potatoes.

The Quebee papers report that a vast quantity of potatoes has been bought in that Province by American buyers, the Cana- dian grower receiving the American market price less fifteen cents a bushel which the

grower contributes to the United States treasury for the duty. The buying season begins in November and closes at the end of June. Of the extent of the trade an idea may be formed from the report for 1877 of Mr. Howell, the United States Consul at Quebec, now Consul at Toronto. He siys: ‘IT find that during the period between the middle of November and the last of June there were certified for exportation at the four consulates in the Province, invoices for 782,- 732 bushels of potatoes. The quantities, with with the average value at the different points were as follows : —

“These potatoes at 15 cents a bushel paid duties into the United States Treasury to the amount of $117,309.80.

In other words the farmers of Quebec lost $117,409 through not having a home market, and being compelled to pay the American duty.
