Rev. J. M. Withycombe del'vered two lectures in Charlottetown—one on Mon- day evening aud one on last evening. On beth occasions he was greeted with good audiences and listened to with the closest attention. Last evening, in St. Peter’s Schoolroom, be lectured, for the benefit of Prince Street School library, on New fonodland. He treated almost entirely of Newfoundland’s fiebing industry and its fishermen. The lecturer, however, first gave a short geographical aketch of the Is- land, told of its discovery by Joho and Sebastian Cabot, and of its early settlers including Sir Welter Raleigh, Sir Hum- phrey Gilbert, Sir Dawid Kirk, Lord Balti- more, and others. Hethen described the various fishiug industries, the principal of which are “tish’, (codfist) and seal, and

gave sad accounts of the awful catastro- phies which frequently take place on the Banks avd off the coast ot Labrador. Lastly he deslt with the French shore dfficulties—‘the greatest menace to the success ef the colony.”

He quoted from the treaty of Utrecht and showed that the French have no real right: On the land whatever. They merely have concurrent fishing rights in the waters ou one side of the Island. But the French with great audacity have trespassed greatly upon the righte of Newfoundland, while England, because of ber friendship for France after the Crimes» war, looked passively on.

A vote of thanks was eloquently moved by Rev. G. M. Campbell, beartily second- ed by Mr. Fred’k Brecken and tendered to the lecturer by the chairman, Mr. Percy Pope.

After the lecture was over, a number of views, in, round,and about Newfoundland were thrown on the canvass, but owing to a disa ter—disasiers generaliy oecur in connection with Newfoundland, Mr. Withycombe rays—to the lantern, they were only a partial success. Between the lecture and the showing of the views Mr. J. R. Davison sang Kingsley’s ‘ Three Fishers.”

The society held its first meeting on the 15th of December, 1893. The election of office bearers resulted as followe:— Mrs. Reddin, President ; Rey. Things to Make a Note of.

Rev. Mr. Campbell’s lecture on Thurs- day evening will be one of intense interes to our citizens. Charlottetown wus rep- resented on the Crimean hills by at least two of her sons, the late Colonel John Hamilton Gray, the present Dr. Jobn T. Jenkins. Mr. Campbell has a big subject, but no one doubts his ability to handle it.

Pivk Ere.—-The Chicago Record states tbat the brand of influenza*popularly known as “pink eye,”’ ie prevalent in that city,Dr. W. D. H. Brown (formerly of Charlotte- town) reporting thata large number of eases have come under his observation. The proper name of the disease is oph- thalmia, and it is one to which grip patients are especially subject.
