As yoru know, I am running for a position

on the Student Union Council at Junior~ Arts Representative. I do not think thatit is my place to make any campaign promises, but if elected I can assure you that I will do my utmost to be your voice in the Student Union Cmmcil.

During the past year I have served as a stud- ent representative on the Senate Subcommittee on Rules and Regulations and as. Chairman of the House Committee of Main Building. In these positions I have gained much experience in work- ing with committees and this combined- with other

student activities in which I have been involved will enable me to give you capable representation.

Our coming junior year will give rise to many important questions that will have to be answered. I need your support and trust to be part of this process.

No matter who you support, the important thing is that you do vote. This is the only way that apathy in this university can be killed. Our university has one of the most orientated struc- tures of any university in Canada. It is up to all of us to take advantage of it.

As alcandidate for Internal Vice-President, I i find it difficult to preSent any detailed platform or specific promises. .Unlike the President, the Internal V —P is not himself in aposiztion to define priorities andestablish directions. However, as a member of the Council and of the Executive, he ,—-— or she I —— will strongly influence the policies of the Student Union. For this reason, I shall out- line the duties of Internal Vice-President and comment on howI think these duties should be performed; I The main responsibility is to coordinate the activities of snbdrganizations of the Union.‘ I would like to see even more coordination and communication among university organizations; so that entertaining and worthwhile activities are encouraged, so that students and the Student .Council are informed about what is going on, and so that activities are better spaced — not all tak-

‘ Asa candidate for the office of Treasurer in your \UPEISU, I stand for two things: proper financial management of the affairs of the Union and! a regular accounting of funds for the infor- mation of all; union members.

At times this year I have shuddered at the manner in which Union fund-s were managed. It seemed that the “in-thing” to do was. to spend, spend, spend Without any semblance of priorities being established or of the interests of the stud- ents-at-large being taken into consideration.

I am not for this type of financial manage— ment of Union fund‘s. \ '

If elected, I propose, first of all, to utilize a “financial committee” to set spending priorities for next years Union activities. This will be done through a “three-stage approach.”

1. The committee will meet and consider in- itial, short range and long-term spending pro-— posals for all Union activities next year. The meeting will be held before the end of March and all Union organizations will be asked to submit spending proposals for! consideration at that time.

2. The committee would again be activated as soon as possible after classes commence in Sep- tember to consider supplementary spending pro- posals which may arise over the summer months.

3. The committee would meet for a final time before January of next year to review the year’s spending program and to make recommendations for consideration by the ensuing Union Council.

My second proposal, if elected, will be a monthly audit of the books of the Union. This will include a monthly financial statement to council, the publishing of the same in the CADRE and the distribution of the report to the students. It is my feeling that the students are “taxed” 39535. per year as a Union Fee and, as such, they deserve, yes even have the right, to know where their money is being spent.

The third proposal which I place before you is that there should not be an increase in the Union Fee of $35. for next year. With the antici- pated enrollment of 1,800 students, the static na- ture of the Union Fee should be sufficient to provide for all the amenities and services which the students will demand.

Finally, let me speak about the proposed Student Union Building. This is a very noble undertaking for the student body of this new university.

In the first instance we must make sure that the new SU building is designed to compensate for our expectations of the next ten years. In doing so, we must ensure competent planning, financing and construction practices are employ- ed in getting the building “off the ground”. Per- haps the biggest consideration is the necessity for proper capital management both during the construction, equipping and operation of the building in the final analysis.

These then are my proposals for your con- sideration. If they are what you want, then give me your vote on “election day”. It will be a de- cision that I will strive to live up to, for I will know that I have your confidence.

The candidate proposes that his primary ob- jective, if elected, is to act as the official spokes- man for all Junior & Senior Business students on the UPEISC. To facilitate the above proposal he realizes that he must make himself available on a 24 hour basis, and promises faithfully that he will fulfill the above proposal.

Being one of the most progressive faculties on campus, we need a strong voice on the Stud- ent Council. If elected I am prepared to provide this voice, and to build a positive relationship be- tween the Student Council and the Business So ciety by attempting to influence council policy making decisions in reference to matters involv- ing the Business Society, by keeping business students informed on what’s transpiring in coun- cil meetings, and expressing “their” opinions and ideas on “all” matters effecting the Business So- ciety students. *‘

Ken DeHonney, Candidate, Jr./ Sr. Business

The role of the External Vice—President of the Student Union is one, principally, of acting as a liaison betWeen the Union and all other associations and organizations that pertain to the student union. I decided to run for this position because one of my main concerns in the student union is that of the role we can play outside the union and the. university.

The office of the external V.P. should be one of the connections between the union and organi- zations such as the Tenants Unions and the Farm' ens Union, to name a few. Also this office should be the office for maintaining a close connection with the government re: the proposed bursary system and seeing that the best possible system for bursaries be implemented. Also I feel that there {should be more student participation in the student loan system where the students desires to this end could be aired. This could take the form of a student committee to the government.

If elected, part of my position will be sit- ting on the Board of Governors. My feeling is that this body cannot possibly be efficient in do- ing its job when it only meets once a month for a few hours. The Board should take a more pro- gressive attitude on the matters of the univer- sity _and not be continually restricted by public oplmon.

" The office of external Vice-President holds great potential if the position is taken conscien- tiously and that can mean a lot of work. If elected, I think my interest in the position itself requires this of me.
