If Canada, without further plans, is to hold her current trade status with Britain after the termination of Marshall Plan aid in 1952, then Canada must increase purchases 1mm that country by an annual $365.000,000.

That is approximately the trade ‘balance in Canada's favor. In the year ended last September, Can- ada bought from Britain $325,000,- 000 worth of goods and sold $601,- 000.000.

'l‘he balance in Canada's favor was made u-p of $120,000,000 made available to the U.K. through an Anglo-Canadian loan and $246,000,- 000 from Marshall Aid funds.

Referring to the establishment of the dollar-sterling trade board to help United Kingdom exporters sell in Canada, Mr. Howe said he hoped the Canadian Exporters’ As- sociation would lend its support. He also asked business men to help put over the Canadian Interna- tional TraSe Fair next year as a means to bolstering Canada's for- eign trade.

He foresaw 1950 as a favorable year for exports but said there would need to be some adjust- ments. These adjustments may see the export figures not as “impres- sive" as those attained in 1040, he said, '

High domestic demand, neverthe- less. would cushion the effect of any adjustments. The domestic de- mand already has been able to fill the gap created by export mar- kets restrictions.

“For example, foreign sales of motor vehicles have fallen sharp- ly in recent yea-rs-and current e_x- ports are running at an annual rate of about $50,000,000 below the 1947 level.

“Nevertheless the strong dom- estic market coﬂtinues to absorb close to the maximum output of which the industry is capable."

In the textiles field, sales abroad were likely to drop this year to about half o1 the $57,000,000 worth of exports in 1045, but home mar- ket requirements were greatly in- creasing.

Thus, the "expansion, modem- lzation and improvement in effi- ciency and productivity of Cana- dian industry in recent years is paying us dividends at home as well as abroad."

It was the Government's purpose “to ensure—in so far as lies within our power, that this strong and healthy domestic situation will be maintained."

MONTREAL, Oct. 24 —- (GP) - Wanted: Some means of protect- ing the faces of hockey goalies that will not hinder them in stop- ping pucks.

Since Baz Bastien of the Amer- ican Hockey League Pittsburgh Hornets lost an eye last month in practice and Bill Durnan oi Montreal Canadians had his eye injured last week, the suggestion has been raised that goalies wear a. mask. But some sports writers think that's no solution.
