Prohibition and True Temperance.
Srir,—Permit me to ask through your columns what has become of ** True Tem- perance ” lately; has he sickened from an over-draught of his favorite medicine, or has he gone on a journey in search of some better proof that Prohibition is always a failure? Tinfer from his productions that he is not only a good Latin, but also some- thing of a French scholar, and I shall pre- sume he also is a good Hebrew reader, from the variety of quotations he has given us in the past.
Now, sir, let T: T. come with me to his Hebrew Bible, this I suppose him to have at hand, and let him read the following texts: Psalm 140—3: ‘* Adders poison is under their lips.” Deut. 32—33, ‘* Their wine is the poison of dragons.” He will not deny that the Hebrew word for ‘* poison” is khamah, and let me also say that, *‘It is worthy of note that the Bible supports the view that alcohol is poison, Also in Habbuk, 2—15. Instead of bottle, St. Jerome’s version has it “ poison.” Montamus has it *‘ thy poison,” and worse than all Parkhurst detines khamah ** inflam- matory poison.” Again, Sir, we all know that the Bible declares that wine “ biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder”; in which text there is no sense, unless we have in view the fatal poison which those reptiles eject with their bites. Is it any wonder, then, that the Almighty Jehovah should pronounce so many bitter woes upon the use of such poisonous stuffs as those which T. T. advocates the a of even ina moderate way.
