The heavy rains of late July could have wreaked havoc on many buildings on the UPEI campus, including the Robertson Memorial Library. The sewers, unable to handle the on- slaught, backed up both inside and outside the library. The flooding inside the library building started in the Pit and the washroom area, flowing towards the stairs to the basement. As the rain built up outside, the water pushed into the library ; building under the revolving door. As local news agencies reported at the time, there were fears that the flooding might damage the facility seriously, and in particular there were concerns for the safety of the library’s books, some of which had been sprayed with water from the backed-up plumbing in anearby sink of sorts.

Overall, the damage was kept to a minimum and the main concern was cleaning up the foot-and-a-half of water in the library. The use of a large wet-dry vacuum aided in getting the larger amounts of water off the floors, and since much of the area had tile flooring there was little need even for that | outside of the few carpeted areas touched by the flooding. The only section of books touched by the water was the rare book room. Fortunately, the only damage was to older editions of books presently in the reference section, and with newer or alternate copies of these books in the library’s possession the loss can easily be written off. ‘‘[The relative
