For the purpose of the experiment two buildings about 11 feet square and 30 in height had been set up—similar in all respects, except that one was made of ‘‘treated’’ timber and the other of ordinary timber, each being also furnished with a chimney for the purpose *f treating a strong Graft and facilitating combustion. Outside of these houses, on the windward, flrewood and shaving: were piled, which Were set on fire simultaneously. In five min- utes the building of ordinary timber was well ott firé iid in about half an hour reduced to ashes, while the other structure remained intact save for the charring of the woodwork on the side exposed to the direct action of the flames. A further test had meanwhile been applied by igniting a pile of shav- ings and fagots inside, but again the effect was merely to char the wood, which did not break into flame. A box, too, made of the treated wood and which had been placed in the midst of the ignited material was afterward drawn out practically uninjured.—New York Sun.

A Use For English Sparrows.

The crusade against the killing of our song birds cannot but receive the indorsement of every right minded wo- man. We are all ready to join Audu- bon societies and to help in every way to keep our forests peopled with beauty and teneful with song. But there isa little rowdy fellow beyond the pale of our sympathies — that wicked little fighter, the English sparrow. Individ- ually he is harmless enough, but col- lectively he is capable of the greatest mischief. The extermination of our song birds is apparently the chief aim of his existence. We can néver forgive him, but our wrath against him should be mollified because of his one redeem- ing point—he is good in pie. ‘‘Four and twenty’’ of him would reproduce that matchless dish of nursery fame. Under the alias of ‘‘reedbird’’ he is constant- ly sold in our markets and praised by purchasers in the final act of disposing of him. So let us enjoy sparrow pie in and out of season, since we may do s0 without a moral twinge and indeed feel that we are doing society a service.—

A Tube Straightening Machine.
