Amuerst, Oct. 10.— A large store formerly occupied by J.A. Macqueen, ex : M. P., a house formerly occupied by J. E. Roach, and two small double dwellings owned by the R.C. Church at Fort Lawrence, the terminus of the Chignecto Marine Railway were totally destroyed by fire last evening.

The Boers Hesitate

Lavysmira, Oct. 8.—The British force has been greatly strengthened during the last 24 bours. I suspect that the hesita~ tion of the Boers is due to their changing their imperfect cartridges, their lack of support, and the backhanging of the Free State column.

In my judgment, the Boers are no match for well-led British troops. Even their guerilla tactics can be checked without an overwhelming army of regulars. Recol- lect, that in arranging any peaceable seitle- ment, there is danger that the Kaffirs will conclude that England is afraid of the Boers and must be reckoned with. The burghers waut war. The newest plan is for General Joubert to pretend defeat at Leing’s Nek, when Genera] Buller fol- lows him through the passes.
