A DESERTED VILLAGE.
According to a despatch from Wieh ita, Kan., J. M. Davie, a member of the Legis- lature from Kiowa county, gives a direful account of the condition in his section of Kansas, and especially of his own town. Five vears ago Greensburg had 2,500 in- habitants, now there are 123. There isa bonded debt on the municipality of $45,000, and practically no valuation with which to pay it.
The few people now there decline to pay their taxes, and lots and buildings are being sold by the county treasurer. Farm- ers come into town and buy tax certificates fur little or nothing. These they desire
for the buildings, which they remove, car-
ing nothing for the lots. Five years ago a flouring mill was erected at a cost of
$7,009, the city giving $3,000 in cash. Recently this building was purchased for a tew dollars and removed to Colorado. Dear Sir,—Yesterday a friend asked me if it were the case that horse races were to held here to-day and to-rorrow, to which I replied in a rather surprised tone, “Yes, have you not seen them advertised ? ” which was answered in the negative. 1 have just walked around Queen Square and the foot of Queen street, and nota single poster is to be seen in reference to these races, but over twenty-five appear for the bicycle tournament for 2nd Sep- tember.
Now, Mr. Editor, our shareholders won- der why this Association does not pay as they anticipate, but [ can tell you many of us know, and it is this: the Executive DO NOT ADVERTISE as they should.

Jamaica, L. L., August 19.—Miss Dora Reisen, daughter of Isaac P. Remsen,- a prominent man here, was sent to Blqom- ingdale asylum yesterday a raving menace. Miss Retiisen was a stout. young woman, and a few months ago commenced taking a flesh reducer. In ashort while the com- pound affected her mind. She was re- moved to the Amityvil home, and in a short while grew worse. She was then brought to her father’s house here. A few days ago Miss Remsen tried to assavit her mother. Then it was decided to remove the unfortunate girl to an insane asylum.
