Money towards its conatruction, we hear, was voted dur- ing the last session of parliament. But voting money is merely ialk and wind, like the speeches of politicians, until something be done with themoney! We hear, ‘railroad! ” “railroad ! ” but nota stroke of work,—and the eeason for work - ing isabout ended. The buildingof the railroad and bridge necessitates the mak - ing of a contract between the Dominion and Local Governments to carry out the provisions of our Local Act. Has that agreement beea sigaced? If ithas why do not Mr. Irving and Mr. McKianon | produce it, or at least say in 0 many werds that the ayreemeot has been signed 2? We respect both the gentlemen, apd our knowledge of them leads us to the conclusion that 1f an agreement has been come to and signed both and each of therm would, ere now, have said so. It is very odd to be everlastingly casting up to us the great obligations, we are under for this railroad and bridge, while a whole season is about elapsed and not a stroke of work ‘isyetdone. The fiddling soundings on the
local elections, are toc thin to deceive any- ove, and are of no benefit to us on the south side of the river,—or indeed to any~ one elee, except to a few of the faithful who get the pickings of the job. The home tnis- sion report, presented by Rev. Dr. Mc- Millan, it was intended should close with a familiar quotation from the scriptures, but the type-setter makes it read : “Fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible ae an army with hounds.”
Socrats Last Nicut.—The social in the Baptist schoolroom last evening was in every way a success. The programme was excellently reodered. The great num~ ber present thoroughly enjoyed themselves by it ard the tempting refreshmeate.
An enjoyable evening wa3 spent in St. Peter’s Hall where the annual social for the congregation of tbe church took place. The social was successful in its object of drawing together the members of the con gregation in social intercourse.
A Terrie Tracepy.—A double trae gedy is reported from tbe township of Wilberforce. abont eight? miles from Eyanville, Ont. On Wednerduy morning the bodies of Mrs. William Yaster and the 17 year old dangbter were found hor- ribly multilated about their heads by some heavy instrument while in bed. The husband and father, William Yas‘er, aged about 50 vyeare, who for some time has
| given evidence of intanity, is accused of
doing the terrible deed. He had previous~ ly threatened to take their livee. Three childreo younger than the dead daughter who were in the bouse atthe time gave the alarm to the neighbors.
Loxcevity 1x P. &. Istaxp.—There lives in King’s County, P. E. I., two very old people. One is Edward Power, 102 years past. Born in Tipperarv, Ireland, before the rebellion there iv 1798, he left there when quite young on the gocd ship Oceau, owned by one Kent, of Newfourd: land. He emigrated to St John’s, Nfll., first, and stayed there five years, after which he weot to Grand River, King’s County, Prince Edward Island. Since that time be made a home at Farmington, where he now lives. Mr. Power is iu eplendid healt, and claims he will reach the ripe age of two hundred, The Sun reporter asked what reason he gave for his age, and he replied that he always made his living by farioing, slept but little, and smoked lots of tobacco and drank strong tea.
The other aged person is Mrs Mossey, a widow lady, now of Glencorradale She is 92 years past. She was born on eve of the Magdalen Islands, and emigrat- ed to Prince Edward Island many vears
ago. She lives with her son, Isaac Mossey, a farmer The reporter of the Sun while visiting there found her
bale and hearty, with her eyesight and hearing as perfect as when she was a child. She claims to be able to hear a pin drop, and does ber knitting as regularly as the day comes. She alsv claims that she will not die for many long years.—St. Jobn Sun.
