PIPING PLOVER NEST SURVEY RESULTS DISTURBING by BrucelJohnson, CWS

Comparisons with the 1991 census indicate that there was a considerable drop in the Atlantic Canada Piping Plover population. A 46% decrease in P.E.I.; a 27% decrease in N.S.; and a 28% decrease in N.B. Increases of 146% in Nfld. and 26% in the Magdalens represented only 30 birds. The total population was down by 21% in Atlantic Canada in 1994 with 182 pairs and 36 single birds reported. While there were a few beaches not done at the time of compilation of the results, a few pair aren't going to alter the results. (adapted from a letter dated Aug. 10th, 1994).

ENVIRONMENTAL CALENDAR:

Oct. 1 - There will be a woodlot tour and field day at abhn Curley’s woodlot in Watervale on the White Road. Tours of the woodlot will be offered at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Oct. 3 - The Body Shop in conjunction with naturalists groups from across Canada, the Canadian Nature Federation, and the Sierra Legal Defence Fund will be launching their campaign to have Federal Endangered Species Legislation passed. Drop by the local Body Shop at the Confederation Court Mall to see the display and to sign the petition.

Oct. 4 - The Society’s fall meeting schedule will open with Bernard Jackson speaking on butterflies and butterfly enhancement. Mr. Jackson is the former head of Memorial University’s Oxen Pond Botanical Gardens in St. John's, Newfoundland where he successfully launched a butterfly garden to the delight of thousands of visitors. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Centre on University Avenue.

Oct. 6 — The U.P.E.I. Extension Department is again offering a bird identification course. This year's course will be taught by Dan McAskill and will feature 7 Thursday evenings of lectures and 2 Saturday field trips. The course fee is $ 135. Contact the U.P.E.I. Oct. 16 - The Tryon River Association’s Lecture Series will feature a slide presentation on birds by Dan McAskill. The present- ation will be at the North Tryon School starting at 3 p.m.

Oct. 17 - The Island Nature Trust will provide a workshop on wild bird feeding as part of its seeds on Conservation Fund Raising and Education Project. The presentation will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Centre.

Oct. 30 - Kate MacQaurrie will wrap up the Tryon River Watershed Co-op's lecture series with a presentation on this year’s work. The talk starts at 3:00 p.m. at the North Tryon School.
