City Industries.

SomE years ago, when Alexander Mc Kenzie ruled the roost, and David Laird was “Big Injun” ino the Great North- West, and Louis Heury Davies was earn- ing goodly fees from both the Local and the General Governments, there stood at the corner of Queen and Sydney streets a large brick buitding—vacant, silent, and useless. It was known as the ‘Brenan property ;” and was regarded as an appro- priate monument to the memory of a venerable citizen who had made the pile, and passed away. His spirit had fled, and his body was quict and silent in the grave: its business was gone, and it re mained quiet and silent above the ground. But time changes all things. The writer passed the spot this morniog. What a change! The old building was full of life. Customers were at the counters. Busy clerks were selling goods at the cheapest prices ever known. On every floor skilled workers were employed ; aud the whole place was musical with the hum of busy industry called forth under the favoring National Policy breeze, aud the enterprise, energy aud practical ability of Messrs. Dorsey & Goff.

In tho:e good old days—tcr McKenzie, Laird and Davis—there was another notable property in Charlottetown, the

building tenantless and silent, the grounds overgrown with weeds,— the whole fallicg icto ruin. But now,

presto! itis the site of a thriving soap factory, and every man iu the Islaud,— even the most active and unscrupulous of Grit mud-slingers — may, and should wash with the excellent soap, manufac- tured and sold by Messrs. Beer & Sons, and be clean.

Still another ruin was seen in those days by everyone who passed to and from the city by way of the Malpeque Road. ‘It was practically valueless—a dead loss to those who owned it. But now it is the scene of thrifty industry— full of machinery and artisans—working ou full time—mauuatacturing the wool produced by our farmers—into cloth of excelleat quality for the clothing needed by the people—and yieldiug, we hope, a good living profit to those who comprise the Charlottetown Woolen Factory Com- pany.

A vacant spot on lower Water Street has lately been utilized and rendered valuable by Messrs. Robert Palmer & Co., who have erected a new Sash and Door Factory, and imported first-class machinery, avd who vow employ as mauy first-class men as they can obtain, while their “hum” is often heard long after the usual working hours.

The foregoing are some of the new industries, which have been established in Charlottetown. There are also, some old ones which are worthy of note. “The Esdale Foundry aud Machine Shop,” is one of these. Since the good old days, of ‘‘jug-handled free trade,” this prosper- ous establishment has experienced a wonderful development. A large ad- dition has been made to the machine shop ; a new brick foundry has been er- rected, and another boiler shop is used. About forty hands are employed aud boilers, and engines, and castings of all kinds are being manufactured, not only for mills and factories in all parts of this Provinee, but for mills and factories in the neighboring Provinces as well. A short time ago several sets of castings were sent from Esdale Foundry all the way to Australia, where they will, no doubt, give satisfaction and reflect credit upon Messrs. McKinnon & McLean.

Messrs. Mark Wright & Co. have

also made extensive additions to their Furniture Factory, and have lately imported several very valu- able machines with the latest

improvements; aud they are doing about double the business ever dove inv the same establishment.

Mr. Johu Newsou’s Furniture Factory was unfortunately burned last wiuter:but his hands are at work on the premises oceupied by Major Dogherty; and he never had a better demand.

These and other industries which might be mentioned, if we had space, are an unmixed good. They benefit the town and they benefit the couutry, For iustence, most of the boots and shoes made by Messrs. Dorsey and Goff are made from leather produced in the country, and the wool used by the Char. lottetown Woollen Factory is taken direct from the backs of our farmers’ sheep, and the food cousumed by all the operatives of ali the factories, is the pro-

duce of cur” farmers and _ their wives, children and servants. So the country reaps its profiis.

The town is advantaged (1) by the in- crease of the value of property. The lands aud buildings now oceupied by the Shoe Factory, the Soap Factory aud the Woolen Factory, and all the other factor- tes, would not, practically, be of any \alue whatever—indeed, they would be a burden, for the owners would have to pay taxes —if it were not for the produc- tive industriés Which are belug carried

In those “good old days’ to which we ferred, hudreds of houses were vacant iti ithis town, and the priuters were often employed in printing slips of ‘house

‘empty will be found to be very few in ldeed |! What’s the cause? The chief | cause is that there is a greater number of | working business men inthe town, on ac- ‘eount of the growth of our city iadus- ‘tries! These men have their families who ‘live in the town, and increase its trade. The forty artizans employed by McKin- non & McLean, for instance, represent from one to two hundred inhabitants, all of whom would either leave the town, or cease to be producers, if their establishment were closed. And if they were not here, the population, business and profits of the town would be so much lessened, while the burden of taxation borne by those who remained would be by so much increased.

The City industries, too, help one another. ‘Thus the prosperity of Messrs. Mark Wright & Co. makes necessary a larger and better boiler and engine for their factory. The consequence is that Messrs. McKinnon & McLean, and their artizans are now employed in doing the work ;— and the more industries there are, the greater will be the demand for such mutual assistance.

The very great importance of these industries, the desirability of promoting their increase, and the inexpediency of do- ing anythiug which will in any way show that we are net awake to the advantags of having them in our midst, are theu apparent.

Now, we do not wish to claim for the National Policy anything which may not fairly and legitimately, be claimed for it, The success of the city industries, now prospering in Charlottetown, is no doubt, due in great part, to the skiil, ebergy and enterprise, of those who con- tro] them, to advertizing in Tue DaiLy EXAMINER and Tue WEEKLY EXAMINER, to the good times which prevail through- out the country, and to other causes. But it is an updeniable fact that several of the factories of Charlottetown would never have been started, would never, perhaps, have been thought of, but for the advantages aflorded their proprietors by the National Policy and the thought and discussion, incideut to its establish- ment and maintenance, which was brought to bear upon the subject of home manufactures.

We are, therefore, justified in asking the people of Charlottetown to do nothing which may even seem to show that they do not fully appreciate the advantages which our city industries have derived, and are deriving, and will continue to derive, -from the National Policy.

The Qualification of Voters at the Coming Election.

Every voter must beamale person, of the age of twenty-one years, a British sub- ject, not subject to any legal incapacity, and must have been duly qualified for at least twelve months next before the teste of the Writ of Election; and must,in additien, be entitled to one or more of the following qualifications:

Pirst.—For an Electoral District must own a Freehold Estate of the clear yearly value of Forty Shillings, consisting of any Warehouse, Shop or other Building, or any Farm or piece of Land, or must be in the bona fide use and occupation, or actual possession of any such last mentioned pre- mises,

Second.—For an Electoral District, ex- cept in the City of Charlottetown, the performance of Statute Labor, or Commu- tation Money for the last year, for which the same shall have become due next be- fore the day of holding the said Election, together with the Overseer’s Certificate, and a twelve month’s residence in the Poll- ing Division, vr holding a situation ex- empting from Statute Labor by Act of Assmbly.

Every Mortgagor or Cestui qui trust in actual possession by himself, or his tenant, of Real Estate of the yearly va!ue of Forty Shillings, Dower Land set off and reduced into possession, and value Forty Shillings per year.

The clear yearly value as aforesaid to be estimated by the annual value of the build- ings, or by the value of agriculture or other produce yielded by the land.

In the City of Charlottetown, in case no Provincial poll tax shall be imposed, then every male person of the age of Twenty-one years and upwards, being a British subject, and not subject to any legal incapacity, shall be entitled to vote as aforesaid, who, being liable to pay Civic poll tax for Char lottetown and Common, shall, in the event of any Civic poll tax being imposed by the City Council of Charlottetown, have duly paid such tax, or, in the event of the said tax exceeding seventy-five cents, shall have duly paid seventy-five cents of such tax for the year immediately preceding the test of the Writ of election in which he claims to vote; provided always, that every person claiming to vote by virtue of Civic poll tax qnalitication shall have resided in Charlottetown and Common and lioyalty twelve calender months, and in the polling division in which he shall claim to vote, twelve months next before the teste of the Writ for said Election, and shall produce to the Deputy Returning Olficer, if required so to do by him, cr any candidate or the representative or agent of any candidate, a receipt or certificate in writing, subscribed with the name of the Collector of said tax in the District wherein such person claiming to vote shall have so resided, testifying to the effect that such person hath duly paid such tax, or, in case the same exceed seventy-five cents, then,

The Lobster Fishery.

FURTHER representations as to the unfavorable weather for our lobsters fishery, having been made to the Depart- ment of Marine and Fisheries, it is understood that an additional extension of time, for at least five days, will be granted to our lobster fishermen. This will make the season fifteen days longer than it is ander the law. The extension will be a great beuetit, particularly to fishermen in the Western part of the Island. Artillery Competition.
