character of a flower will help one to understand how two or more of them may be artistically combined. Yellow daffodils look pretty with white cherry blossoms, and the Pyrus japonica com- bines well with white narcissus; but pansies or violets always look best when they are quite alone. Certain flowers are graceful, others are cheerful; sume are bold and effective, like the jack in the pulpit; some are delicate, like the lily of the valley. It stands to reason that these must be arranged so their characteristics are not hidden. It is ossible to produce a pretty group of Soetereteps and daisies, whose gold and white effect is always charming; but the addition of a single pink blossom spoils all! To keep tlowers looking well the water should be changed daily and old bléssoms thrown away. Notice to Commercial Travellers.

The attention of Commercial Travellers is calied to the following sections of an Act yaased by the Legislative Assembly of Prince Raward Isiand, Session 1864, intitaled “An Act to Impose a Direct tax on Certain Classes of Traders ” :—

i. “From and aflerthe passing of this Act every casual trader not permanently residing iu this Province doing business within this Province, commonly known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and every person not permanent- ly residing in this Proviner, and who sells either for himself or any other person any goods, wares or merchand)zo in this Previnee, or solicits or canvasses tor orders either for hiinseifor any other person for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize w thin this Provinee, either by the production of samples, photographs, cata- logues, printed or written matter, or simply by word of mouth without the production of samples, photographs, catalogues, printed or written matter, shall, before he or she enters upon the business of so selling any wares or merchandize, or soliciting or can- vassing for such orders, pay tothe Provincial Treasurer of this Province an annual license fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars.”

2 °Upon payment of ‘he said license fee or direct tax, the said Provincial Treasurer shellgrant a lieense authorizing the person therein named tore!] goods, wares and mer- chandize in this Province, and to solicit and canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of goods, wares and merchandize within this Provinee. Such license shall be granted and remain in ferce for the space of one year following tie date upon which the said license shall be granual and no longer.”

3“ Any such Commercial Traveller or son not permanentiy residing in this vince as aforesaid, who, atir the passing of this Act, shall sell any goods, wares or mer chandize, or solicit or canvass for orders for the sere exchange or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandiz: in any manner afore said within this trovinee without havi first paid the said license fee or direct tax, obtained the said licen-e, shall foreach and every occasion upon which he er she shall seil any goods, wares or merchandize, or soli- ecitor canvass foran order for the sale, ex change or purchase of any goods, wares or meichandize as atoresaid, be liable to pay the sum of two hundred doliars tothe said Pro- vincial Treasurer.”

This Act ts now in force.
