The CADRE in an attempt to provide some information about the U.P.E.I.S.U., ask- ed all five members of the S.U. executive to write a short essay about what they have done since they took over their positions six months ago. we regret that we were only able to get responses from three of the members.

Dear Students;

What's happening in Student Union? Well most of our time and energy so far has been consumed with the re—establish— ment of the various committees and organizations. Most comm- ittees have very good, ener— getic leaders and I think you will agree when I say (for example) that Radio CSUR and the CADRE have greatly impro— ved over last year. The Movie Club has an excellent, well organized schedule of movies thanks to its Chairman Christ- opher Lee. The Campus Police are doing a good job despite the criticism that comes auto— matically with a job like that.

We've been working on the possibility or feasability of starting a Progress Fund’ for a new Student UniOn Build- ing. It appears that it would be unsuccessfull because of the commitments already given to the Library progress fund and also because of the up— coming Hospital Fund for the ‘ newlfillsborouthospital. Still something should be done. We have a proposal to take to the Board of Governors concerning "Barn" payments (we still owe about $50,000) and if they go for it, it could relieve us of a heavy burden. We are also discussing the poss- ibility of major renovations in the "Barn" with the outcome hinging on (1) the Board's rejection or acceptance of our proposal and of course (2) the wishes of the students.

We are still working on ‘ obtaining a permanent liquor license and it may just be my own optimism but I believe we are going to get it. There will be more to say on this later.

We have established a Stud- ent Committee on Objectives that will function very much like the Senate Committee on Objectives. We aren't opposing the Senate Committee, but we feel it is necessary for the students not only to voice their own opinions but also to search out others and re- cord and submit their own opinions. If you care at all about U.P.E.I. then talk it up about "ObjeCtives". We are here for a reason. What is it?

What should it be? When we ask for answers, ideas, and inform- atiOn, strain your brain a little and help us help you_ and future students.

Now I have a few questions.

Every student has paid $40.00 Student Union fees. What do you get for it? Well there are the weekly Pig 'n'-Whist1es, The CADRE, the Barn, Radio CSUR, Octoberfest, Winter Carnival etc. Yet I'm sure that every student could com- plain about something, given enough energy. Will you please Complain! Out Loud! To Us!

Vice-President -

The job of vice—president is definately interesting. The position entails respon- sibility for the various committees, etc. on campus, responsibility to the Senate, and responsibility for any— thing which becomes delegated to the vice-president during the course of the year.

Committees take up the most time. Applications go through the Personnel Board and their recommendations go to the Student Union Council for scale review in conjunction approval. The vice-president sits on the Personnel Board as an ex—officio member.

So far this year, things seem to be going well with the committees. Pig and

Do you know what you want? Do you care? - There are.only five on the executive. There are about 15 others on council. We need help. If we run out of ideas it doesn't mean we've run out of energy. If we don't find new ideas we can always re- channel our energy to our own

Presently, the Constitution Committee is working on need- ed recommendations to the Constitution. The Personnel Board is working on a pay — with the Student Union Ex- ecutive. Because up until this year there have not been job descriptions for appli- cants who are interested in working on committees, a full report has been written and will be available by this coming Wednesday for anyone who wishes to see it. It Will be published when new committee heads and members are required.
