NEW YORK (AP)—The stock market plugged ahead doggedly last week to make another high for 1958.
The moderate advance of the blue chips which makeup the av- erages had considerable competi- tion from the lower-priced, more speculative issues which once again took a prominent place among the list of traéng favor- ites. '
The Associated Press average of 60 stocks rose $1.30 to $175.60, topping the previous ’58 peak of $175.40. The Dow-Jones industrial average also rose to a high for the year, 480.17.
The market was just below the year’s high as the week started and it inched forward day by day, just squeezing over the top in the final session. The action in the pre-holiday session came as a surprise. Although the advance was modest it was achieved on a. brisk pick—up in volume—an unusual phenomenon prior to a long Fourth of July weekend. In the past, such mar- ket days have been sluggish.
The appmach ofthe summer industrial doldrums was fore- shadpwed by the first drop in steel industry pooduction in ,eIght weeks. Uncertainty over the steel price, situation continued.
Approval by GOng-ress of Alas- kan statehood stimulated Alaska Juneau which gained 1%,:a large percentage rise for this low- priced stock.
