We reached the Court House in Wash- ington just in time to see Judge Porter take the assassin in hand. Judge Porter enjoys the reputation of being one of the ablest jurists in the United States. As a cross-examiner, he is, probably, unsurpass- jed. Guiteau knew that he would be on the rack for several days, and it is little wonder that he seemed disconcerted ard jmnervous. His voice was not strong, but he | gesticulated wildly. He stated that he had }eaten too much on Thanksgiving Day, and | was consequently indisposed. Guiteau is a | a glutton as well as a murderer. | Up to to this time, Judge Porter had l taken little part in the proceedings.
