University Parking. ”

Regulations?

The University has deemed

it important enough to act- ually have a sub-committee of our Senate, simply to set up and review our "Parking and Traffic Regulations". In fact, our present parking regulation (absurd as they are) actually got approval from both the Senate and the Board of Governors. ~

Each year, these six pages

of rules concerning the "Par—

king and Traffic Regulatio— ns" are printed and handed out to every student and faculty mamber that has a car. Then a University park- ing permit (sticker) is iss- ued to every person who owns a car. (if you may drive more than one car during the year i.e. your fathers, your wifes, you must also get a sticker for that car) Then the Security Police go th— rough all the lots giving warnings to all the people who don't have stickers on their cars. After the Secur— ity Police have done this

a few times, they will go around and give tickets to everybody that doesn't have stickers on their cars (and if you don't pay the fine within seven days, the Sec- urity Police can cancell your parking privileges, re- move the vehicle from the

ate all this great waste of time and money, and let peo—

'ple park where ever there is a regular parking space. The

only concession that I could see making is (if you want to give out stickers) reser— ving one of the more conven— ient lots in front for peo- ple who actually need them i.e.people in wheelchairs

or with walking disabilit- ies.

It states in the "Parkipg Regulations" that "visitors parkingwis solely for the use of visitors to the cam- pus on business. Every stu— dent and faculty member is at this University for bus- iness. We can go and use the K — Mart parking lot' and not be forced to have a sticker on our car. In fact, they don't even get mad at me when I park there, walk through the store, and

don't even buy anything.“ There are a lot of other rules listed in the regu- lations, i.e.speed limit, obstructing fire hydrants, driving carelessly etc. All of these are simply a repeat of the basic rules of the road. It is interesting to note that in a copy from two years ago under Section II part F; it states "will be notified by the Business Office that their parking privileges are suspended." ~ In the copy of the parking regulations you receive from the Security now, it states, "will be notified by the Security Office that their'

parking privileges are sus- pended". The interesting fact that the cover of both ‘of.these are identical with "approved by the Senate on November 16, 1972 and by the Board of Governors on Nov- ember 27,-1972.

If the cover of both of them are the same, who gave the approval to move the power from the Business Office to the Security Off- ice? Since somebody feels that they can change these rules as they see fit and most of the rules are so absurd, the most effective action is for students and faculty to take the power into their own hands. Everybody at the University should scrape off their stickers on the same day and put an end to this ridiculous situation.
