An im portant sale of a grand herd of importer aud home-bred Ayrshires, owned by th: estate of the late Thomas Brown, Mun real, was held onthe 20h of April last. You corresp ndent was on hand and secured fo: the P. E Island Stock Farm Chieftsin of Barcheskie, the imported bull which stood re the head of the herd; also the favorit: milk cow of the herd, Ardigowan Ist, anc her calf, Tom Brown, sired by Chieftain ot Barcheskie Chieftain is not only indi viduaily a fine sample of the Ayrshire breed, but—what is more important—he has proved to be the sire of prize winners His sons and daughters, although ye’ young, have been remarkably successful in the show ring, and at the sale brought from one hundred and fifty to two hundred ano fifty doliars each. Chieftain was bred in. Scvtland. His pedigree proves in his veins flows the cream of bet shire and milk-producing sires aud dams in that county. At the great Montreal Exhibition in 1891, Chieftain won first prizs in aged bulls, and diploma as best bull of any age, and headed the herd that took the deploma—twelve herds com. p ting. An old gentlemen who, in his é.clier days, was a very successful breeder vf Ayrshires in their original couniry, Scotland, but is now liviag on his money in Montreal, speke to me after the sale was over, and in a friendly and sincere way icongratulated me on having got in Chief- ‘tain of Barcheske by far the best bargain iat the sale. His words wee: ‘I know ‘all about that bull and his breeding. He [cOmes of the very best stuck we have in Scotland, and is in every way « grand Ayr- shire. He is good enough to head the best herd of Ayrshires in the world” Thar gentleman’s fear was that the herd here was nor fit company for Chieftain. I en- deavored to comfort him by the statement that many of our cows were of direct desceu.. from a cow and bull bred by. the ‘Duke of Hamiltun. There are two Ayrshire societies with their respective herd b oks or registers at present in Canada. The Quebec breeders have a provincial society and call their record the Canadian Ayrshire Herd Bovk, while the Ontario breeders, backed up by New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, established the D» mition Herd Buok and Ayrshire Society, whose record is recognized by the United States custom house, eximbi ion asgocia- tions, and all the world interested. The disputes between the two societies ended in & lawsuit, and Senator Cochrane was ap- |pointed arbitrator. His decision was that [certain animals on the Quebec or Canadian
Herd Bok were not qualified to register in the D -minion Register; but he recommend- ed, as a compromise, the admission of these doubtfal pedigrees to an appendix, marked A, in the Dominion Aynhire Herd Book. Quite a large number ot tne cattle in Mr. | Brown’s herd, were, in one way or another, jon the questionable list, but as L had a jittle ‘information about the trouble, the ones I bought were at once accepted by Mr Wade, the secretary of the Dominion Herd Bovk, he being present, and they are now recorded. I may add that all the cattle on the Island Government Farm are eligible for entry on their respective Dominion Herd B. oks, and that steps will % ou be taken to have it done, thus placing the stock there on an equal footing with the best herds in Canads. The truth 1s, these little local or provincial registers are a de- lusion and @ snare. They wili never be recognized anywhere except in their own locality, and entitle their cattle to no con- sideration abroad, either from custom houses or exhibitions. Let Island breeders beware of being gulled into supporting « sock register for their little Isiand. It will prove an expensive and useless luxury. Avy beast worthy of being registered can be cheaply and easily entered with the Dominion register of the sucie y pstroniz ng that particular breed. The Dominion Shorthorn Society is a dis:inct b dy, in no Way connecied with the Ayrshire soviety. The ssm2 is true of each and all the steck registers. The C ydesdale men louk after the Clydes, and the Shire m-n afrer their pets. But the idea that the breeders of all and every sort of pure-bred horses, cattle, hogs and sheep are to be under the control of men who neither know nor care about the peculiarities of any breed but the one they msy be ioter- ested in is too absurd fur further notice. Finding I could do better farther West, 1 left Montreal the next day after the sale and went to Hamilton. An Interesting Case.

Bernard Brannan, a well-known citiz-n who brought over the Paris rowing crew to Halifax some years ago. Brannan was taken ill on Aprit 2ad, ot erysipel«s in the head, and died on April 8th. His sudden demise has been the cause of a rather com. plex question of life insurance, which may be of interest to the large number who are affected by life insurance contracts to-day. Ona the 19:h of March Mr. Brannan gave an applicstion for $5,000 of insurance to the local agent of the Confederation Life Association. When giving the application Brannan said he would make payment when the policy was received. The application was forwarded to the head office, approved, snd in due course the policy was sent through the Halifax « flive

Mr. Green, provin- cial manager for the company, visited St
John, and after enquiring into all the facts. submitted the propus.tion to the company and to Mrs. Brannan, whether, with the und -ubted intention of Brannan tu pay the premium, and of the company, on its part, t» deliver the policy, receive premium, and fix upon itself the amount of the insurance, —might it not be fair for each par'y to ad- mit the insbility of the other to tke the steps necessary to m-ke it a complete con
tract, and at the same time for each to

directors of the company, who immediately au horized a settlement on this b-sis, and tre matter has been closed by a payment of $2,500 insurance by the company and pay ment of premiun on thatsum by the bene- ficiaries under the policy.
There are some nice points in a case like this which can perhaps only be sppreciated by parties who might happen to be similarly interested. The view taken by the company, who cannot, of couse, admit any legs! lisbility, is thyught to be an hmorable one, and yet it is eminently fair on both sides,
