Axotuern Porsostve Case.- A young women named Christy McKenzie, belonging to Wood Islands, dic dat the residence of Mis. George Lowe, King Street East, last evening. Davin took up the time of the House all afternoon to-day, but of his five attempts at legislation, four were snuffed out at_ the request of Hon. Edgar Dewdney. :
Mr. Davin’s fifth resolution relating to the prevention of Prairie fires being started from locomotives was withdrawn in conse- quence of a declaration by Dewdney that legislation on this subject is to be intro- duced bye and bye.
In the evening, the bill to incorporate the Banker’s Safe Depos t Co. was passed and the title changed to Dominion Safe De- posit Company.
Davin’s motion for a commission of in- quiryinto Commissioner Herchmer of the Northwest Mounted Police was taken up, Davin speaking on Watson’s amendment,
After considerable discussion, Sir John Macdonald announced that Herchmer, having requested a strict inquiry, it was the intention to have a departmental investig- ation into the management of the police.
Watson’s amendment, asking an investi- gation of Herchmer, was lost by 76 to 52.
Davin's motion was declared lost also, and the House adjourned at 12 55.
The Northwest Territories Bull is fixed for the committee stage in the Senate to- morrow, when Senator Bellerose’s motion to stiike out the clause concerning the dual language is expected to give rise to an ani- mated discussion. Dalton McCarthy is to- day reported as saying that when the bill reaches the Commons he will oppose this ‘lause. This intended action of Messrs. Bellerose and McCarthy against’ the compromise arrived at by the House of Commons is only further proof of the wis. dom of that settlement. It is also said that in the separate school clause of that bill Mr. McCarthy will take the opportunity to urge the constitutional amendment to provide for the abolition of separate schools.
The Government Banking Act is expect- el to come up again for discussion in a few days. Sir Donald Smith’s vigorous objec- tions in the interests of the Bank of Mon- tveal, resulted in a cali for a bankers meet-
ing, which took place this afternvon. The meeting discussed the question of the
guarantee fund, proposed by the Finance Minister, and the note circulation. One of the suggestions that was considered was an issue of bank notes to the extent of 75 per cent. of the capital, with the privilege ad- ded of issuing notes to the emount of actual specie and Dominion notes held. The present indications are that the bil will not be allowed to pass without consider- able opposition, unless the Government consents to modify it before it goes into committee again.

it is reported here that Mercier has in- formed his supporters that an agreement has been arrived at between the different governments that the provincial gen- eral elections in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia will take place simultaneously on the 10th June next.
Fate of a Masterpiece.
Montreal, Aprill4 .
It is stated here this evening that Millet’s great masterpiece, ‘‘ The Angelus,” which was purchased in Paris for $120,000, by the American Art Association, is now in the vaults of the Bank of Montreal, and that it was brought here to prevent paying the duty of $30,000 to the United States.

During the stay of Mr. and Mrs. Plews amongst us. they have by their kind and gevisl dispositions made many warm friends, who exceedingly |yegret their departure a6 evidenced by the large number who accompanied them to the steamer at early morn to say the last good- byes. We wish them all safe home again.
