Last week we heaped praise on the lady Panthers basketball team and claimed that their 13-0 record was, by far, the best ever attained by any team from UPEI.. .much to our surprise we find that we were in error inasmuch as the Barbara . Mullaly coached team of 1970-71 had a 15-0 record as they wcn the Maritime Intercollegiate Inter- mediate title with an unblemished record. Stars of the team were Rosemary King and Lynn Crosby and, we note from the record book, the statistician was Betsy Epperly, now Dr. Epperly of the English Department. We assume, from this, that the girls advanced to their d'lampion- ship without splitting an infinitive nor dangling a participle. Our present Pantherettes matched the envialbe record of their predecessors this past weekend as they also went to 15—0 with a 62—41' victory over Mount Allison and outscored Monoton 65-31. In the first game Cathy (handler was our high scorer with 14 and in the Mmcton game Mary Jane Ready shone with 18. These wins clinch the league title for our girls although they have more to play. . . .the next two with Saint Themes here this weekend. We'd like to Comment that the girls Played Mancton Prior to the Panther—Saint Mary's game andwe think this is a gleatyidea. Most of the overflowing crowd that (heered the girls on to Vlctory remained to watch the Panthers play and we . are sure that the large and loud supporting cfilldience helped our boys 111 their good showing. The basketball Panthers had two GOOD games over the Weekend although the IESult was a split. The loss 85—74 with saint MaIy's (rated #2 in

seomd half. Most fans were eager to see two of Canada's best college players on the sane court .and both hmetown Iarry McGhee and SMJ' 3 Mickey Fox put on a brilliant display that left proponents of both certain that their man is the better. Iarry, we

spectacular player ever to appear on our floor. He can twist, turn and, we - think, could dribble through a crowded srbway car without touching a person! His defensive play is a pleasure to watdu and he can certainly put the ball in the basket. Midcey Fox is, of course, an outstanding player and it was he, 'with his team trailing, who spearheaded the rally that brought them victory in the closing

. moments of the game.

Critics may say he doesn‘t carry the ball enough but why carry it when he can put it through .the hoop from almost any conceivable angle or point? Fox scored 28 points and Larry 25. In the Pbmt Allison game, which we won 89—80, the margin of play was much greater than the 'score indicates as Coach Kevin Feighrey, with a comfortable lead, inserted his bench players for experience. 'Ihe~ spectators were very pleased with his move as they were impressed with the hustle of these hard working players who seldom receive the credit they deserve. Although they watched much of the second half from comfortable side— line seats, McGhee was high scorer with 33, followed by Ken Salter's 24. In hockey, although we Split in 2 "Away" games, the news is BAD. In a very peculiar game, from a penalty standpoint, we beat out Mount Allison 7-4 being Shorthanded 7 times in the first two periods, 6 in the second alone, and still gave

up but me Shorthanded goal as Howie Murnie shone brilliantly in the net. Shane Tumer potted 2 goals while singles went to

Rory Beck, Ken Burton, Brian Camerm, Mike Selledc and Gary Trainor. David Cameron further advanced his league scoring lead with 2 assists. On Sunday the Panthers carried their 6 game winning streak into Mncton where it was brought to an abrupt halt as Ies Aigles Bleu, recently (11 the rampage, handed our heroes a 6—4 trimming, after we had struggled to a 4—4 deadlock, only to have them succeed‘on two breakaways. Our goal scorers were Ken Burton, Gary Trainor, Shane Turner and Larry Arsenault. Much

_ worse than the defeat,

however, was an injury to our outstanding player, league leading scorer David Cameron who sustained an injured knee that, optimist- ically, will sideline him for 2-3 weeks, pessimistic- ally, will put him out for

the season. David is under- going tests at the

hospital at the motent to determine how serious the injury may be. Dmny Morrison rotund racontuer of the ‘ Guardian, comments that coincidence is being carried too far. last year we went into Monctm with a

winning streak only to have it broken, both years we had beaten Mt. A. the night before by 3 goals. In both years we scored 4 goals. Both years David Cameron's left leg was injured. Both years the same referee and, in both instances there was no penalty. It should also be noted that, in both years, David was leading the league scoring race. Perhaps we should try for a change in the schedule next year. The team hits the road again this weekend with games at U.N.B. on Saturday and Sunday. We are still in K the playoff picture with a hope for second spot and a home playoff schedule. The standings and remaining opponents:
