Sir Hector’s Announcement.

When the Hovse assembled yesterday Sir Heetor Ladgevin announced the course that events had taken during the adjourn- ment, stating, by permission of the Gover- nor General, to the following effect: It was found by His Excellency that the state of public affairs did not necessitate the for- mation of a uew cabinet until the grave had closed over the late Premier and the last honors had been paid him. On the morn- ing after Sir John’s funeral His Excellency, exercising his constitutional right, applied to Sir John Thompson for advice with re speet Lo steps for forming a new govern- ment. Later on Mr. Abbott was summon. ed, and, after consultation, accepted, on Saturday, the work of forming the Cab- inet. Mr. Abbott communicated with his colleagues, who signified their consent to retain their present portfolios, which was sanctioned by His Excellency, Mr. Ab- bott himself assumed the presidency of the Council, The vacancy in the Railways and Canals, caused by Sir John’s death, has not been filled, and that department will be temporarily administered by another member of the Cabinet.

_ No remarks followed Sir Hector’s read- ing of this paper, and the next order cf business was proceeded with.

The House went into committee on bills effecting the administration of justics. Michael Connolly was then announced. He appeared in obedienc: to the summons r- presented by counsel, who read a lorg statement explaining why he had refused to deliver up books, saying that if the House ordered him to deliver the books he would bow to decision.

After the reading of the document, Con- nolly was ordered to withdraw.

Sir Jobn Thompson thea addressed the House and made a mvtien that all said books be produced by Michael Connolly and delivered to ahe C.erk of the House. The motion was carried unanimously.

The House then went intu supply and rushed things till 11.

The Badget Speech wiii probably be delivered on Friday. The heat is terrific. There has been no rain for some time and the weather is duing enormous damage to the wheat coming ia beard. The thermometer yesterday registered 89.

There is no doubt that the Opposition are are gieatly disappointed at Abbot»’s selection as Premier, and at the easy way the Coneer- vatives have fallen into line behind him, A prominent grit member is known to have remaiked, ‘‘Abbot‘e’s selection is the very best for Conservatives and the yery werst for us.” Their faces yesterday aptages their dissappointment.

Ail necessary business will be rushed through, leaving several heavy measures not absolutely pressing over for next year, and the sezsion will be prorogued at an early date.

The popular crusade against the Prince of Wlses shows no sign of abating in strin- gency or bitterness. After the lecture delivered last night at Corrovan, Wales, by Iicairy M. Stanley, the band played ‘God bless the Prince of Wales.” The Welsh- men, however, no sooner heard the first strains of the familiar air, than they raised a storm of hisses which almost drowned the noise of the band.
