Such writing you shun be— cause it might make you think and critically assess your gwg life and bring to bear upon you the anxiety that ch— ange would mean. Rather than face the anxiety that change implies you will try to aff— irm your present way of life even more; however, this is self - defeating because true living is a transforma— tion prodess which-necessi- tates change and, of course, anxiety.;

The cheap and superficial campaigning and electioneer— ing was sufficient for you - you did not want to be cri— tical — you wanted someone

to tell‘you things would be alright: that someone would

take office and do every- thing for you: that you were not to blame for the pro— blems upon which the plat— forms were based but, that

the previous executive werei to blame.

This makes you feel secure and not blameworthy — so you will vote for he who sh- outs the loudest about how he will keep everything going smooth for you without even the slightest suggestion that you must participate in order for him to carry his plans out. It does not occur to you that he is not inter- ested in you except to get your vote so pg can get po- wer for himself!

He caressed you, pampered you, soothed you and lead you to believe he had the answer -— but you were not critical of him for, if you were, you would have exposed

Dear Mr. Editor:

In your editorial on the "Subtlety of Deceit” in Sen- ate, you seem to make two major criticisms. 1) That the structure of Senate de- nies the possibility that students will have their own way, and, 2) that individual Senators engage in dishonest practices.

The first point has consid- erable validity. The Senate is clearly not structured for student ascendancy over faculty, nor should it be. Perhaps a case can be made for reducing or eliminating the ascendancy of faculty over students to achieve at leaSt equality of opportun- ity. Assuming that you are not merely a dishonest per- son, playing the game of

"Editor" using the ower of print for self-servgng pur- poses, I trust that you will publicly propose an alter- nate which would remedy its present defects. I also hope that if you do this, you will take the trouble to con- sult the students rather than seeking to impose your own views.

In your secind point about dishonest practices, you accuse me of making appeals to authority in a subtle manner for the purposes of impressing and mystifying others.

You correctly note that I have myself conducted muchof the research which, in an x attempt to flatter me, you call authoritative work. Hon- esty compels me to demote my work to something like , careful, thorough and con- cerned but you grant too much in calling it authori- tative.

You are misleading when you say I appeal to my research in education in a subtle mn- ner. Rather do I appeal to it directly and blatently, because I do not want to mys- tify. The RepEFt on Teacher Education which Senate has been discussing is a public document and it is my hope that Senators making dec— isions about it will read it.

As for seeking to impress, I'm afraid that if I do that, it can only be gar you, Stan, because no one else on Sen- ate seems to be very im- pressionable.

The herd is composed of running dogs -- running from the pangs of reality and, as long as they run, into the very thing from which they run -- the necessity of their own responsibility and per- sonal committment. If they didn't accept it they incur the consequences of running: if they accept it then they can deal with it -- but when? The student body will find that it will have to be very critical of the incoming ex- ecutive, for if it is not , it will allow Campbell's ex- ecutive to exist in a vacumn apart from the students. The seeds of totalitarianism grow well in such soil —- watch it!!
