A Chapter of Delays.

One evening not long ago a slight blaze was discovered in the neighborhood of the corner of Prospect and Erie strecte, and a rush was made for the fire alarm box. As sometimes happens, the whereabouts of the key was not known, and for a minute or two there was slot of wild anxiety run- ning to waste. All sorts of suggestions were offered, but nobody took advantage of them. Fortunately a short policeman came trotting up and presently produced his key. It was attached to a chain, and the chain was attached to him. It wasa short chain, and the box was pretty high up, and the key didn’t come within six inches of the keyhole. The short police- man puffed and tugged.

‘*Well, by George!’’ he said.

‘Lift him up!’’ roared somebody.

**Hold on, boys,"' said the officer, “I'l loosen the chain."

He unbuttoned his cont and vest and the waistband of his official trousers and finally released the jangling attachment. A moment later the door of the box flew open.

‘*Let me see,”’ said the policeman, ‘‘you turn something, don’t you?”’

The fact is, he didn’t know anything about it.

“*Say,"’ said a funny man in the crowd, “will somebody kindly step around and ask that fire to be as deliberate as possi- ble?”’

This made everybody laugh.

“‘T guess the cop takes this for Lupmon, don’t you know,”’ said the funny man again.

“Pulldown de knoeb,’’ yelled a small boy, and the short policeman obeyed.
