. > Tue Patriot is wrong in saying that ‘the Government are paying last year’s bills out of this year’s revenue.” In point of fact the Government have ordered the expendi- ture account of last year to be kept open until the 15th inst., in order that, as far} as possible, all expenditures of last year may be included in last year’s accounts. Perhaps the Patriot will, as in duty bound, make a correction, and apologise to its readers for misleading them in this respect.

Irish National Land League. | The regular meeting of this organization was held in St. Patrck’s Hall last even- ing It was one of the largest meetings of the League. Several ladies favored the occasion with their presence. The /usual routine business was disposed of, -and a number of new names were added _to the membership. | A letter was read from the Secretary, re- | porting the formation of a Branch of the Land League, named the ‘ Parnell Branch, | St. Cuthbert’s Parish,” near Baldwin Sta- tion, with every prospect of success. _ {t was resolved that the following letter, | received by the Treasurer of the League ' from the late Hon. Col. McGill, the day previous to his death, be published :—

Wa. McGri. Ou the introduction of resolutions of con- dolence for the late lamented Vice-Presi- dent of this League, Messrs. P. D. Cox, John Kelly and P. R. Bowers paid a grace- |ful tribute to the generous nature of the deceased gentleman. Mr. Bowers especi- ally dealt with the life and labors of Col. McGill, and referred te the deep interest he manifested on all occasions for the welfare of the people, and to his charitable disposition, which was always ready to re- lieve distress.
P. D. Cox, Esq., was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Mr. McGill; and John Kelly, Esq., was elected Assistant Vice-President.
The President introduced tv the meef- ing Mr. James Davis, who was prevented, on account of the weather, from address- ing our last meeting. Mr. Davis —who is hiinself an Englishman by birth—occupied 'the platform for over an hour. His sub- | ject was the “‘ Cause of Ireland.” It would ‘be impossible in a short report t6 do jus- | tice to Mr. Davis’ really fine addreas. The
blundering policy of British statesmen in ,regard to Ireland—and especially that of Mr. Gladstone, of whom the lecturer had a personal knowledge—was described in no gentle terms. The lecture abounded in | passages of rare eloquence, and was de- \livered in a manner which entitles Mr. | Davis to rank amongst our best public speakers. The applause was both loud and ifreqnent, and the audience felt con- ivinced that the ‘‘Cause of Ireland” had a worthy and able advocate in the per- ‘son of Mr. Davis.
Councillor Byrne spoke in complimentary terms of the address, and believed that if Mr. Davis was now in Ireland he would be deemed worthy of a place in Kilmain- ham. Mr. Byrne felt certain that the present year is pregnant with great events for the welfare of Ireland, as just a hun- dred years ago Henry Grattan secured for her the boon of Legislative Independence.
P. R. Bowers, Esq., also bestowed the highest praise on Mr. Davis’ effort.
Other gentlemen endorsed the senti- monts of the previous speakers, when the thanks of the meeting were tendered Mr. Davis, to which he warmly replied.
The President, in a few closing remarks, regretted the fact that there were yet some Irishmen, and Jrishmen’s sens, in this city who were not members of the League, ani could not See a reason why this was so..
