The death owurred in the Prince Edward island hospital on Monday morning, November 17th, of Mrs. George ivuisoir, m her 69th year,

She was the former Bessie Cum- mings, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Curmnings of North River.

The deceased had been in failing health for the past two or three years, but her death came as a great shock t0 her family and friends. Slhe was of a kindly disposi- tion, and endeared herself to all.

She leaves to mourn besides her- sorrowing husband. two sons Earl and John at home; two sisters, Mary. Mrs. Henry Hurry, West Royalty; Mattie, Mrs. Chas. Malone.

City and four brothers Chas. and Harry, City; Robert, Montreal; Jacob, Alberta.

Her funeral which took place from St. Peters Church was con- ducted by Canon Malone.

Liberal Promises

Can you imagine. ladies and gentlemen. of Premier Jones put- tinz planks in his platform promis- ing the Brighton Bridge and a Compensation Act for Labor. We well know him to be quite adverse to these matters by his own state- ments from time to time.,I have no doubt that the Liberal candi- dates from Charlottetown and from my own district, finding themselves not overly popular in their canvass on account of their Leader's adversity to Labor and tho Bridge project, insisted that these planks be included. There was also a plank dealing with a Prohibition Plcbiscite inserted at. ,the last minute. Electors of this Province, do you feel that the ,Government is in good faith. l Why were these important items not. included when the Premier announced his platform at Morell on November ll-th, lest. I submit ‘to you. Ladies and Gentlemen. that these items were never con- sidered in the Liberal platform 1"- all, until the Conservative plat- >form was announced. and when the Government candidates after three weeks of canvassing, found .that their ship was not "Steady as she goes." but was "founder-

l Agriculture

I It has been said on many occa- I

sions, that no Province in Canada has a greater dependence on Agri- culture than Prince Edward Is- land. This being the case, it is only proper that any Government of this Province should interest itself primarily in the cause of farming and farmers. The Conservative Party have placed Agriculture as their first and chief plank in their platform, and I direct your atten- tion to our pledge for a complete rc-organizatlon of the Department with special emphasis being laid on the encouragement of more ‘Jld better live stock. I It has been said by authorities in a position to kiiow that Prince i Edurard Island should have a mini- ‘mum of livestock population aI l 150,000 cattle and 200,000 hogs. But. flvhnt is our position. It is doubtful .lf there is 100.000 head of cattle lnnd only about 50 per cent of our minimum hog requirements. and these items are getting less. day by day, due to the crisis in our feed requirements and the cost thereof. Our chief concern should be st all time! to be on our guard to protect our Farming Industry. Was the late Government on guard to our Farmer's interest dur- .lng their past term of office. We |lmport some 2 1-4 millions of bushels oi feed grains annually. Due to manipulation of the West- ern grain market, this feed is now costing approximately 30 cents o bushel more or $750,000 which is to be taken out of the Farmer's pocket. _Did our local Government. who are supposed to be in a close touch with the Dominion Govem- mcnt and, other agencies in the. "know," make any effort to head off this increase by control or otherwise. st a time which is proving a crisis to our Farmers in the feeding of their stock sud with the consequent depletion of .our cattle, hogs and poultry which -wc can ill afford.

As I said on the floor of the Legislature last spring if there Ls one thing that should beat the Government at the Polls in the election, that thing is the Govern- ment sdverse attitude against the erection of an elevator in Princc Edward Island. -

Before passing on to matters par- ticularly concerning my own dis trict. I note that in s. recent ad drus by a candidate of the Liber- al party. he took exception to state-' ments concerning taxes to be levied on farmers under the Income Tax Act and pointed out the reductions to be made for 1946 and I947 by ‘Finance Minister Abbott.

1 would like to point out to thc- farmer electors this salient point. that Mr. Abbott announced a very substantial decrease in the taxa- tion rate for i947, but, he budget- ed for an increase over 1946 in his income tax collection. If he is to collect more in I947 than in 1946. despite the reduction in tax. where is the money to come from. Is it to come from the farmer pro- ducers for the past several war yenrs_ who have not put in a re- turn and were not asked so w do Judge for yourselves. Is it fair to ask a farmer today to file a re- turn for 1943-44-45.

Our farmers were asked to pro- duce in the war years as never before. 'f‘hey responded, are they now to be paid off by getting a notice to file returns three, four and five years back_- and these demands are now being sent out-- and more will be mailed. We. on the Conservative side, have taken up the fight for thefsrmer, espec- ially the Farmer of Prince Edward Islsnd. who in war time exerted himself to the utmost on behslf 1f our War Effort.

Problems In 2nd. Queens

I will now deal with my own district, the Second of Queen's, s district unequaled in Prince Ed- wurd Tolmd_ a district extending from tho sec. on the south to the sea on the North, o district typi col of Prince Edward Islsnd in its Forming and Fishing activities; a district of industrious Partners, and s district paying more than theil equo] shores of the taxes of DIlIe Pmvince. What has been our lot under Liberal rule from I935 to 1M7 and more especially under Liberal rule of the Jones Government from I943 to 1947.

Although one of the leading tax- psying districts~ since 1035. wc hove seen our roads neglected. our ferry services unsupported. and our Fisheries unencoursgod. n s ro- suit of this neglect, this tradition- slly Liberal stronghold elected two Conservatives in I948. In our four years of office. myself and my colleague farmer, Phillip Matheson hove endeavoured at all times. to work for the better- ment of the district. and to interest tho Government in the needs of this fine rural section. We never received our proper shore of gov- ernment work and improvements. We did receive o. mere token of our just. deserts.

In this Province, our Farmers sre satisfied if they are merely given s decent road in their district. In my district. despite the hesvy taxes paid, we have not, in tho past hwolvo years. received our equitable more of the Government revenue. It Is only now that rosd work is being done.
