Making your mark in the federal election

es, that time is almost upon us again. That

time when you hit the polls and vote for

the potential Prime Minister that turns you on the most. The federal election; when we dump the old Prime Minister (unless he or she’s lucky enough to run successfully again) and bring on a fresh new act.

It is to those of you who have just turned 18 or who have never voted before that I am speaking. If you want to learn how to vote, keep reading. This is serious business.

- First, you must get your name on the voters list of either the riding that your family votes in or (if you are a resident student), the riding where you are going to school. (UPEI is located in the Hillsborough riding). Go to the Elections Canada office in downtown Charlottetown and signup. You will need I.D. to prove that you are eligible to vote (driver’s licence and/or birth certificate). Important: If you want to vote in your family’s riding, then actnow. GO pick up a special ‘‘mail-in ballot’’ at the Elections Canada office or your local post office and vote on the spot. The office will then send the ballot

to your home riding (you will again need proof of L.D.).

-Once you have registered, you must vote. This year’s election is on October 25 between 9am and 8pm. Advance polls are on the 16th, 18th, and 19th of October between noon and 9pm. Voting for ‘‘Poll 44’ (which includes UPEI) is to be held at Oak Tree Place Mall. Remember, if you want to vote in your family’s riding get the ‘‘mail-in ballot’’ now.

-When you go in to vote, find the Election Clerk, who will check your name off and give you a ballot.

-Go to a booth and select the party of your choice by placing an ‘‘X’’ in the box beside the name of your choice Important: Don’t write anything else on the ballot.

-Fold the ballot and give it back to the clerk, who will then fold it again and put it in ‘‘the box’’, and remember: once it is in that box you can’t change your mind.

To tell you the truth, I have never before voted myself, so this article is helping me as well (Don’t worry, I didn’t make any of this up). Just a little advice: if you don’t vote because you think your vote won’t make any difference, you will have no right to dump on the new P.M. because you will have had the chance to vote on who you believed was best for the job. So vote now and complain later. Do something worth- while for your country.
