Orrawa, April 6.—Hon. Mr. Fielding made his fiscal statement yesterday atter- noon.

said that the total was eiyht and a quarter millions current year.

He estimated the total revenne at $39,- 300,000; and the expenditure $550,000 less —so that the surplus for this year would offset the deficit of laet year.

Hence the increase of the net debt for the current year would be in the neighbor- hood of four and a ialf millions.

Going on to the year commencing on the firet of July next, the Finance Minister estimates that when the full preference re- duction comes into force and foreign na tions are sbut off, our trade with England will be increased and some revenue will be lost. Secme tariff increases wou!d be made to meet this logs.

For the next fiscal year, 1&98-99, he estimated the revenue at $40,500,v00.

The main features in the tariff changes are in sugar and tobacco and the teriff preferences,

It 1s proposed to restore the polartiss cope test of sugars. The increase in duty is from 8 cents to 24 eents according to quality.

Oo unstemmed raw leaf tobacco the duty of ten cents per pound on stemmed is increased to fourteen cents in addition to the excise duties at prevent levied.

The list of countries entitled to the pre- ferential! tariff are Great Britain, Bermuda Britian West Lodies, and any other British Colony or possession the customs tariff of which,on the whole, is as favyorabie to Canada as the British preferential tariff is to such colony or possession.
