Mrs. Felliciani, wife of an Italian moulder living in the fifth story of a tenement house on Wooster street, New York, killed bedbugs by candle light Saturday afternoon urtil she set a busk mattress on fire. After buMing her hands trying to extinguish the blaze she rushed screaming from the house, forgetting her baby, which lay on a bed in the next room. Sarah Gill, daughter of the housekeeper in a tene- menot two olf, crept from her house, along rickety fire escapes, to the buil ling ia which the fire was, plunged into the smoke and flame, and brought the unconscious, but still living baby, safely back by the way she had come. When she had dropped the bady on a bed in her room she promptly fainted. The fire was put out. Felliciani, com- ing home and learning of what had happened, made no further comment than: ‘Vella, dem bedbugs was gona any how.”

The Value of Knowing How.

While Judge Tracy was on the circuit, going from court, his trace broke. The judge spent over a half hour trying to fix it but to no purpose. His patience exhausted, and he expressed his vexation in words. A negro came along, and the judge told him of his difficulty. The negro let out the trace cut a hole in it, and the job was done.
