A meeting was held at Montague Cross Roads last evening and at Uigg on the even- ing previous. Both these were decidedly in favour of the Government candidate, Mr. Crawford, whose election is safe be-

yond a doubt.

Personalities at Pownal.

——

No person acquainted with the manner in which the Patriot has attacked the Hon.

Mr. Ferguson for the last six months, can sympathize with Lawson, Stewart & Co., on account of the reugh handling which they say they received from Mr. F. at the Pownal meeting. If Mr. Henry Lawson would only treat his opponents with com- mon decency, he would soon find that he would have little to complain of. It would, however, be folly to expect anything like fair dealing from the Patriot. He is evi- dently one of these to whom the words of ; Byron aptly apply :—

Even thea the boldest start from public

-sneers, Afraid of shame, unknown to other fears.

More darkly sin by satire kept in awe, And shrink from ridicule, if not from law. "

We are assured that the Patriot’s version of Mr. Stewart’s ruffianly attack on Mr. Ferguson ia altogether untrue. Mr. Stewart was first to make allusions to private busi- ness—but he gained nothing by doing so. We hear that the opposition will not allow Mr. Stewart to attend any more meetings in the Belfast district ; and for this at least, they are, to be commended.

It seems that at Pownal, Mr. W. D. Stewart read to the assembled electers the contents of a paper which he said was written by Mr. F. W. Hyndman—to the effect that Mr. F. W. Hyndman had not prepared the statement referred to at the meeting and published in the Examiner of yesterday; that it was a false statement ; that it was prepared by some one else, and only signed by Mr. Hynd- man as Provincial Auditor at the request of the Leader of the Government. This is the report ; and we believe it substantially correct. If so, Mr. Hyndman has certainly much greater ground for compaint against Mr. Stewart than against the Hon. Mr. Sullivan ; for nothing Mr. Sullivan could possibly say could be half so damaging to Mr. Hyndman’s character as an official and a man. Had Mr. Stewart attacked Mr. Hyndman, the effect would, of course have been nil. But as he -was attacking the Government and defending Mr. Hyndman, his statement is most damaging and libel- lous. We look for a contradiction, or at least an explanation, on the part of Mr. Hyndman. Indeed, we should not be much surprised if Mr. Hyndman sued Mr. Stewart for libel.

Mr. Patrick Raymond Bowers must have known when he penned the above paragraph that it would injure me, and T have no doubt that it was wilfully inserted in his paper with | this malicious intent.

The reader of the above paragraph would in- fer that I had been collecting money and giv- ing receipts for Mr. Bowers, without his order or auilority. ’
