The final candidate to be discussed was Dr. Meincke's biggest competition. This Was Dr. Thomas H.B. Symons, former president of Trent University.

onto others. Some of the Com- mittee members were also con- cerned-about his health. Dr.” SymOns is a heavy man. Some people doubted whether a man who lacked self-discipline would be devoted to his job like a.president should.

NEW JAIL um 10 BE BUILT
at Correction not Punishment
CHARLOTTETOWN (IIS) -- ‘ Details concerning .the new Correctional Centre were released Monday by Premier Alex 8. Campbell. The Premier said
,the building will be
located on a 200- acre site at the end of the Sleepy Hollow ROad in West Royalty. ‘
He said it would cost close to $3- mil- lion and should be ready for use by early next fall.
Accommodation for 76 inmates will be provided in the splitlevel struc- ture. A unique feature of the structure is that it will be primarily heated by wood, through ithe gasification of wood chips and the roof will have the proper angle and load-bearing char- acteristics for the fut- ure_installation of solar heating panels.
Inside, inmates will be assigned sleeping rooms. Common areas will include a dining room, kitchen, library, hobby room, chapel, visiting and counselling rooms, medical room, and exer- cise facilities.
Although movement in and out of the building will be striCtly con- trolled, the Premier said the new centre will be' without bars on doors and windows. inmates who have proved their good behaviour will be able to move freely within their assigned living and working zones. Some lockable rooms will be available for inmates. on remand—and for difficult prisoners.

He said the inmates will also maintain several acres of vegetable garden , plots, lawns and flower beds, under qualified supervision.
“In effect, the inmates will be growing some of their own food, providing‘the fuel for heating their environment, and at the same timewill be acquiring skills that will provide them with jobs when they leave the Centre.”
The Premier said social involvement for 'inmates will also be an important part of the rehabilitation process.
“We have made pro- ‘gress in this area al- ready through the active recreation program that was underway this summer. To carry on this momentum, the government is prepared to set up a Citizens Advisory Committee, with seven members chosen from a cross-section of groups and individuals who have shown an interest in setting up inmate recreation programs.” -
