Manchester Guardian : News of Canada’s | growing prosperity must always be good news to Englishmen, but it is best of all when evidence comes with it that the Canadians themselves, stewards of vast un- developed resources, are faithful to their stewardship. At the Mancbester Chamber of Commerce yesterday Mr. Fisher and Mr. Robertson did more than bear witness to the great progress that their country has made in agriculture and the kindred in

dustries. They explained the pains that tbe Government had taken to ebtain the best commercial and technical advice for the framers, to provide meana for carrying their produce uninjured into the best mar~ kets, however distant, and, finally to make known its excellenceto buyera in other countries. It may be, as Sir Frank Forbes Adam maintains, that the ‘sentiment of not an appreciable commercial force in Lancashire; certainly the Canadian pro- ducer is neither so foolish nor so na- patriotic as to trade upon it. In the introduction of these new ele- ments intothe national spirit and life, however, I see nothing that is calculated to create any distrusts or to retard the currents of trade or to place any check upon the great national revival that has set in through every department of busi-

ness. Indeed, the direct tendency of these new elements is to stimulate national acti- vity and confidence. Hitherto, the nation has been in a measure restrained by a sort of self-distrust arising from the fact that 188 strength has not been fairly measured by foreign forces. The four months of hostilities with a European power, has revealed a resource which ranks us with the most potent powers and shows that we have nothingto fearas to our ability to protect our interests against whatever comes. This establishes a new basis of national cowfidence, affords a new guaranty of our national credit and adds to the value of all our forms of public securities. This view bas not yet had its full effect in the financial markets; its complete result is likely to come through an increased foreign demand for our investments.
