It should be bridged if the teachers would have their pupils capable of doing something better than book-keeping or toiling at the plough, without a knowledge of the outer world and things around them. A_ provincial training school, an annual convention monthly institutes held in certain localities, allowing teachers a cer- tain number of days to visit each other’s school, and a systom organized whereby the teachers in different sections could ineet on certain occasions to study the various branches of learning, would inthe opinion of the writer, help to bridge the gap, and at the same time tend to lift the teacher’s profession to the position that it should oecury. This would increase the teaclier’s labors, but what o‘that? Hard toil has its reward.

Mr. John Cantwell has again been ap- pointed Inspector for Souris breakwater. We understand that about seven thousand dollars is to be spent on the work this fall, and we do not doubt that Mr. Cant- well will doa large amount of work with this sum of money, as he informs us that he is offered stone at 58 cents per cubic yard, timber at $2.80 per ton, and iron at $2.18 per hundred Ibs.
Engineer Ezan, while in Souris, said that this work would require at least
thirty thousand dollars this winter to make it secure.
We feel confident that the Government ‘vill grant this amount, as the breakwater s a haven of refuge for fishing vessels. Over one hundred vessels often may be seen within its shelter during the storms.
The schr. Mary Joseph arrived this morning from Magdalen Islands with 350 brls. of wackerel for A. Currie, which have been re-shipped on City of Ghent for Boston. Capt. McCarthy says he thinks there are at least from five to six thou- sand barrels of mackerel still at the Magdalens. The schr. Nutwood was about Joaded when he left, and he says the schr. Sea flower will also have a load. The catches there still continue to be good, boats getting from three to four hundred a day.

—Montreal Gazette: The consumption of butter per head of the population of Canada in 1891 was 23.31 pounds, having increased from 20.02 pounds in 1891, and 19.48 pounds in 1871. The exports were equal to 1.4 pounds per head. An N. P. factory in Canada employing 300 men means a market for the output ofa cream- ery and 400 cows. A factory of like size outside of Canada means a market for the product of one cow’s milking. The far mer’s best and biggest market is the home market.’
