1 Five Children Die in Fire

EDMUNDSTON. N.B. (CP) - Five children were burned to death shortly before midnight Fri- day when lira destroyed their two- storey dwelling at Val Lambert. 16 miles west of this northern New Brunswick city. The victims, children of Mr. and Mrs. Maxime Berube. were Viola. 11, Marie Ange, 9, Marie Reine, . Rosalre. 6. and Gilbert. 2.

The oldest child. a 12-year-old girl. saved the other two children, one aged four and the other a year- old baby. Both, parents were out when the fire started in the house, described "wooden shack." All five victims were sleeping upstairs.

The oldest girl, whose name was not immediately available. was rocking the baby in the kitchen when she saw flames com- ing from behind the stove. She said there was no time to rescue the other children.

The tragedy raised to 16 the number of deaths from fire in Madawas county since Jan. 7.
