-The February meeting of the W.M.S. of the Summerside Bap- tist Church was held on Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. A. W. Leard.

The opening hymn, "Take Time To Be Holy" was followed by In- vocation by the president, Mrs. Jack MacLeod. Reference was made to the World Day of Prayer Service to be held in the Baptist Church on March 5. Roll call was responded to with a Bible verse containing the word "prayer". Fol- lowing the Scripture lesson in Psalms read by Mrs. Arthur Dunn. the president gave a meditation based on "In quietness and con- fidence will be your strength," followed by prayer and the sing- ing of "Jesus The Very Thought Of Thee".

Mrs. W. G. Ellis presented the missionary study on the life and works of Archibald Reekie, one at the earliest missionaries to Bolivia. She was assisted by Mrs. J F. MacNclll. Following prayer the Mizpah benediction was giv- en. A social hour was enjoyed when the hostess served refresh- mentl.

tan is Cascumpec Point where. at- one time, the Hon. James C. Pope had a large ship yard. Here, in the beginning of thelastcentury, an Englishman named Hill, carried on, an extensive business in timbei'.3 He induced some of the Highland emigrants lately arrived in Prince Edward Island to come here and work for him. and he also gave employment to the French settlers in the adjacent, settlement of Gas- cumpc village. These French resi- dents eventually removed westward to the newly-formed mission of Bloomfield, while the Irish and Scotch workmen of the Point, drift- ed to Alberton. Tliua, out of one mission, two were formed. The Hon. Lemuel Cambridge who succeeded Mr. Hill in the timber and ship- building business at Cascumpec Point employed a large number of workmen of different nationalities who settled in the environs of Al- berton. , About the year 1877 the first church of this mission was built. Itwas, un- fortunately blown down in the autumn of that year. A new frame was erected on the same site; various differences of opinion respecting the finishing of it arose. so that the work was stopped for a while and the outlook for the new church of Alberton wna not at all bright. This matter being brought to the notice of His Lord- ship, Bishop Maclntyre he be- thought himself of his friends. the zealous workers, who had consti- tuted the Building Committee of the Tignish church.

Proceeding to Tignish. His Lord- ship asked these wortliy men it they would give him at day's work on the Alberton Church, for the sake of old times. To this request they cheerfully acceded, and going in a body to Alberton, they shingled the entire church in three days. They were entertained by the Bishop who never forgot the cheer- ful generosity with which they

Ordination in Sacred Heart. Church. On June 20, 1943, Rev. Willard O'Brien was ordained by Rt. Rev. Charles Leo Nelligaii, Bishop of Pembroke. Ontario. Father O'Brien, who is a native of Alberton is at the present time pastor in Nanaimo, British Colum- bia.

Since the organization of the parish of the Sacred Heart in 1879, some thirty of its young ladies have become members of various Relig- ious Orders in Canada and the United states. - O I O

The Church built in 1879 was renovated some years later by Rev. A. E. Burke. Rev. Terence Camp- bell had the church enlarged and a new sanctuary added. The pres- ent pastor has lately had the church painted interiorly and exteriorly and had installed a new. oil-burning heating system which have much improved the appear- ance and comfort of the church. Altogether. the parish property is a credit to the pastor and his parishioners.

The present parochial house which is one of the finest in the diocese was built in 1894, during the pastorate of Rev. A. E. Burke. The builder was Mr. George Gard who still resides in Alberton. He recalls that he cut all the meter- ials the proper measurements on the ground before commencing the erection of the building, a feat which not too many of the present day builders could duplicate.

In 1942 a fine site was secured in the town of Alberton and a beautiful new hall was erected. The building measures 85 feet by

The Western Hospital

In 1944, the Albion Terrace Hotel in Alberton was purchased by the sisters of St. Martha for the pur- pose of hospital work. The re- modelling of the builduig was coni- plefed, providing a capacity of 15 beds. and the first patient was admitted on January 30, i945. Willi realization that the building would prove quite inadequate, a new wing was constructed in 1948, with a capacity of 30 beds including 10 bassinets. This provides a 45 bed hospital for the people of Western Prince County. The new construc- tion also provides complete new X-Ray, iaboi':itoi'y, surgery and delivery rooms.

The parish of the Sacred heart is now composed of 125 families: The parish registers begin on Nov- ember 2, 1879 with the record of the baptism of Bernard Walsh, son of John Walsh and Susana Yea. The first marriage is that of John Buiger, son of James Buiger and Ellen Rowan of Lot 11. and Annie MacDonald. daughter of Archibald MacDonald and Julia Anne Mac- Donald of Alberton, dated Novem- ber 3. 1879. The first burial in that of Mrs. James MacKinnon on November 4. 1879. These three entries are signed by Rev. Siaphcn T. Phelaii, P.P.

"Prince Edward Island Place Names" by R. Douglas, Secretary of the Geographic Board of Can- ads, in reference to the name Ai- berton has the following:

"Alberton, town, Lot 4. After Al- bert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. who visited Charlotte- town at the age of nineteen. August 10 to 12, 1860. Names sug- nested by Hon. Benjamin Rogers. Earlier known as Cascumpequc."

came to his assistance. The church which is dedicated to the Sacred Heart is ninety feet in length by forty feet in width, the height of wall is thirty feet. Its first pastor Rev. B. T. Phelan had it plastered and fitted with pews of pine and walnut. He also added a spire in which he placed a fine bell. The altar at first was 3. temporary one, which was soon replaced by one more in keeping with the style of the church.

Annual Meeting Tryon United Baptist church

The annual business meeting of the 'l'ryon United Baptist Church was held Dec. 20.

Rev. E. J. Barrass conducted a short devotional service after which Mr. Otto Johnson was ap- pointed chairman. Dcacon Arthur Simmons, church treasurer, gave the financial report. Reports of various organizations of the West- moreland Branch were received, as well as from the W.M.S., the Y.W.A.. the Sunday School, Y.P.U. and Mission Band of the Tryon Churrh. These all showed zeal- cus interest throughout.
